It took nearly every match of Major League Rugby’s 2021 season, but the playoff picture is finally set. When it came down to it, there were only two matches that had real, significant playoff implications in the final round of the regular season. Rugby United New York and NOLA Gold squared off for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference on Saturday afternoon while Rugby ATL’s match against the New England Free Jacks on Sunday evening left the door open for an MLR Final to be played in Atlanta. Prior to all of that, though, was a unique Thursday night showdown between the Seattle Seawolves and the Houston SaberCats in the Pacific Northwest. Both Houston and Seattle had seasons…

Round 17 was an important one around Major League Rugby. Not only did it officially end the season for the Toronto Arrows and the San Diego Legion, but some of the results also ended the pursuit for the playoffs for a few teams and threw one final wrench into the Eastern Conference playoff picture as well. The first match of the weekend has huge implications for the home side as the Houston SaberCats traveled up to the Northeast to take on Rugby United New York. After dropping a tough one to the New England Free Jacks and falling out of the second playoff spot in the Eastern Conference the week prior, RUNY needed to take care of business against the…

With only eight teams in action over the Fourth of July weekend, Major League Rugby’s Round 16 slate was a little lighter than usual. Two fewer matches didn’t mean there was any less action, though as Round 16 was packed full of meaningful upsets across the board. The weekend started with a match between two of Major League Rugby’s proudest franchises in the Seattle Seawolves and the San Diego Legion. While the Seawolves and Legion aren’t vying for a playoff spot in 2021, the San Diego – Seattle rivalry remains one of the healthiest rivalries in the competition. Seattle took the first meeting of the year between the two clubs 21-15 back in May – which just so happened to…

Round 15 of Major League Rugy’s 2021 season is officially in the books, and with its completion, the playoff race is that much tighter. An action-packed weekend leaves us with a clearer picture of what the league’s third playoff tournament could look like, but several scenarios remain with three weeks left in the regular season. The first match of the weekend featured a team attempting to hang onto a playoff spot and a team looking to play the role of spoiler when Rugby United New York traveled down to Georgia to take on the Toronto Arrows. RUNY beat the Arrows 31-24 to maintain their hold on the second playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but a seven-point victory over the…

Round 14 of Major League Rugby brought with it four more matches decided by six points or less and saw one more team officially eliminated from playoff contention. As each team’s story continues to be written, there is arguably none more interesting than the season that the Utah Warriors are having thus far. For the third-consecutive week, the Warriors chipped away at a two-score deficit to cheat death and win a match at the buzzer. Rugby United New York fell victim to the Warriors’ late-game antics in Round 14 as Mika Kruse scored the game-winning try in the corner with only a few minutes left to play. The 29-28 win was a huge one for Utah as they continue to…

It sounds crazy that it’s taken until Round 13, but the cream is beginning to rise to the top as Major League Rugby’s 2021 season enters the home stretch. With five rounds to play, the race for the two playoff spot in each conference remains as tight as it has been all year long, but some of the teams at the bottom of the table are beginning to completely work themselves out of the equation. Both the Seattle Seawolves and the Houston SaberCats are out of the hunt with their losses on the weekend. While the path to the playoffs will be more difficult for some, many teams did themselves favors in Round 13. NOLA Gold was one of those…

The 2021 Major League Rugby season has been jam-packed with razor-thin results and that has led to what will surely be a photo finish for the two playoff spots in both the Eastern and Western Conferences. Round 12 brought with it much of that same action. While the Houston SaberCats continued to sputter in a 28-9 loss – their seventh straight loss – to the Austin Gilgronis in the second leg of the Texas Cup, the other four matches on the weekend were in line with what we’ve come to expect out of Major League Rugby this season. Austin took care of the SaberCats to start Round 12, and held onto the third-place spot in the Western Conference with 31…

Round 11 of Major League Rugby’s 2021 season brought with it the twists and turns that have made this season so fun to follow. There was a point in the season that the Los Angeles Giltinis looked untouchable. Now when you take a look at the table, they look human. That’s because of the superhuman performance that Rugby ATL put forth in their match with the Giltinis on Saturday night. Atlanta didn’t win the possession battle, had less carries, were out carried by nearly 500 meters, and walked away with a 17-12 victory over the league-leading Giltinis. That’s because Atlanta brought their lunchpail and made a whopping 263 tackles on Saturday night. Theire heroic defensive effort kept the Giltinis bottled…

Round 10 of Major League Rugby’s 2021 season is officially in the books. Every team in the competition has seven matches to play, and while the playoff picture is beginning to take shape, the final two months of the season is going to be chaos for well over half of the teams in the league. The top two teams in the Western Conference kicked off Round 10 a little earlier than usual when the Los Angeles Giltinis and Austin Gilgronis squared off in the inaugural Gil Bowl on Wednesday evening. Not surprisingly, the first-place Giltinis came out victorious in a knock-down-drag-out defensive battle 17-3 over the Gilgronis. A loss in Round 10 wouldn’t have shaken up the standings, but it…

The first half of Major League Rugby’s 2021 season is officially in the books as Round 9 came to a close on Sunday afternoon. There have been a few constants through the first nine weeks of the season. Every match has been unpredictable, the standings will be jumbled around after every single match, and the Los Angeles Giltinis will sit atop the table when the week has concluded. Round 9 brought more of the same results, and while the action wasn’t as cutthroat as it was in Round 8, it was as good as it’s been all year long. The first match of the weekend took place between the San Diego Legion and the NOLA Gold at the Chula Vista…

Round 8of Major League Rugby was the best of the season. All six matches that happened over the weekend were decided by less than seven points. It seemed like every match was coming down to last-second scores and game-saving tackles. On top of all of that, the unthinkable happened when the almighty Los Angeles Giltinis were dealt their first loss of the season, and that was just one piece of a wild weekend around the league. Roun8 started down in New Orleans with the visiting Houston SaberCats looking to put an end to their two-game losing streak against the streaky Gold. Unfortunately for the SaberCats, the Gold broke free from their biweekly winning schedule and used a 28-26 victory over…

Bye weeks for four teams meant that Round 7 of Major League Rugby was a little lighter than normal, but it certainly didn’t lack action or suspense. The table in the Eastern Conference continues to be determined by razor-thin margins while the West continues to be a two-horse race for second place. The Los Angeles Giltinis kicked off the month of May by continuing their stranglehold on the entire competition with another dominant win over Old Glory D.C. on Saturday night. The Giltinis used a 47-17 thumping to improve to 6-0 on the season and remain in first place with 30 table points. Sitting next to their perfect record in the table is a whopping +146 point differential and a…

Six weeks into the fourth season of Major League Rugby has gone by in a flash. With May right around the corner and the midway point of the season approaching quickly, the parity that exists within the league has been on full display. The table is reshuffled after every result because every team is within a few table points of the team directly above and below them. The first fixture of the weekend was the perfect representation of that. The NOLA Gold traveled down to Georgia to take on Rugby ATL in a matchup that would reshuffle both teams around in the highly competitive Eastern Conference. One thing that’s been true for teams that aren’t named ‘Gil’ this season has…

If there is one thing that is certain after the first five weeks of the 2021 Major League Rugby season it’s that every weekend is going to be filled with unpredictable results. Look no further than Round 5. The weekend started with some early morning rugby between the Seattle Seawolves and the Toronto Arrows down in Georgia. The Seawolves, who picked up their first win in Round 4 over the Utah Warriors, were looking to make it two in a row as they try to claw their way out of the bottom of the table. They travelled east to take on an Arrows team that also finds themselves at the bottom of the table after a funky start to the…

The first month of Major League Rugby’s 2021 is in the books after last weekend’s round of matches, and the one thing that remains certain is the unpredictability of how every match will shake out. The exception to this rule has been the Los Angeles Giltinis, who have put beatdowns on the New England Free Jacks, Seattle Seawolves, and most recently the Toronto Arrows in their first three matches. Momentum is a valuable asset in sports, and any worry that the Giltinis had about losing their momentum after their Round 3 bye was squashed in their 43-16 rout over the Arrows in New Orleans in Round 4. The Giltinis started slow for their standards on Saturday. They took a 17-9…

Major League Rugby’s third round of action was a little lighter than the first two. With the league-leading Los Angeles Giltinis and the defending champion Seattle Seawolves on a bye in the Western Conference and Rugby United New York and NOLA Gold on a bye in the Eastern Conference, the other eight teams that make up the competition battled it out on Easter weekend. The first match of the weekend took place up in Weymouth, Massachusetts between the Utah Warriors and the New England Free Jacks. The Warriors went into Round 3 in second place in the overall table after wins over the Austin Gilgronis and Toronto Arrows in their first two rounds. Waiting for the Warriors were the Free…

Scoring was on full display for the second week in a row across Major League Rugby as Round 2 wrapped up on Sunday evening. While the points came in droves, the results were much different than opening weekend. Four of the six matches in Round 1 were decided by seven points or less. That was not the case in Round 2, with only two matches – Old Glory D.C.’s 30-23 victory over Rugby ATL and San Diego Legion’s 14-11 last-minute victory over the Austin Gilgronis – fitting that description. Rugby United New York and NOLA Gold got the weekend started with a match at the Gold Mine in Louisiana. The two 1-0 teams employed different strategies from the jump, and…

Major League Rugby returned to action for the first time in 373 days on Saturday, and it looked a lot different than the last time we all saw it. A lot has happened in the last year. The Colorado Raptors’ decision to withdraw from the competition last April was an indication that the already wild offseason was only going to get wilder. MLR expected two more teams – the Dallas Jackals and the Los Angeles Giltinis – to join for the 2021 season, and held their first-ever collegiate draft. The changes kept coming early into 2021 when the Jackals made the decision to sit this season out and push their inaugural season to 2022. This meant having to redistribute all…

Colton Strickler kicks off this week’s show with ‘The Breakdown’ by talking about the latest former Raptors to sign with another MLR team, the Utah Warriors new rugby school, and tells you about all of the rugby you can watch this weekend. After ‘The Breakdown’, Colton talks to former North Carolina A&T State edge rusher Tré Smalls about his football career and how he’s liking the transition to rugby. After the interviews, Colton once again skips over ‘Required Reading’ and closes the show with ‘The Loop.’ Tré Smalls was played outside linebacker and defensive end for the North Carolina A&T State Aggies football team. He made an immediate impact for the Aggies by playing as a true freshman. Smalls was…
