Line Latu is grateful to be alive. If things had gone a little differently on the morning of June 6, 2021, the American Raptors fly-half knows that might not have been the case. A few weeks prior on May 22, The Colorado XOs – Glendale’s newly formed crossover academy – had just wrapped up their inaugural season with a match against the Los Angeles Giltinis Academy side. Latu, who was one of the only members of the XOs with prior rugby experience, was an integral piece of the team. He scored five tries in 10 matches to help the XOs secure a 5-5 record that spring, and played particularly well in the 33-31 loss to the Giltinis Academy on that…

The RugbyTown Crossover Academy was born on November 19, 2020, with a four-day camp that consisted of 30 players. Of those 30 players, around 25 had never touched a rugby ball before. On November 19, 2021, the American Raptors – the team that the RugbyTown Crossover Academy transformed into – fell 32-29 in their second of two matches against Uruguay A as the team of athletes-turned-rugby-players concluded a two-week tour of Uruguay. What a difference a year makes. In the 365 days that separated the two milestones, the team has gone by three different names, has accumulated a 14-12 record, and has already shown the ability to develop athletes into rugby players at an impressive rate. The maiden voyage that…

The Raptors are back. After the Colorado Raptors withdrew from Major League Rugby back in April 2020, the direction of Glendale rugby was unknown. Now the Raptors brand is back after the club announced the decision to transition from the Colorado XOs to the American Raptors. That goal was to create a program full of high-level American athletes from other sports and teach them how to play rugby. This team of crossover athletes was introduced as the Colorado XOs back in January 2021, and they played a 10-match season against a combination of Major League Rugby academy teams and club teams that…
