Why Broncos fans should feel confident heading into the NFL Draft — No matter what happens

As we head into one of the most pivotal weekends in the NFL offseason, Broncos fans are buzzing with questions. Will Denver trade up? Trade back? Stay put at No. 20?

Here’s my perspective: No matter what happens on Thursday night, Broncos Country should feel confident — and even more than that, excited.

For the first time in a long time, this organization has the right people in the right places. There’s alignment from ownership to the front office to the coaching staff. And that alignment gives this team a real chance to build something sustainable and special.

Let’s start at the top.

The Walton-Penner ownership group has gotten off to a strong start. While their tenure began with a few tough decisions — including the Nathaniel Hackett hire and the early struggles with Russell Wilson — what matters most is how they responded. They’ve stayed the course with George Paton and brought in a proven leader in Sean Payton, who is now heading into his third year calling the shots.

But it’s not just about the big moves — it’s the details. The new grass fields they’ve installed each season aren’t cheap, but they speak volumes about their commitment to player health and performance. They’re also in the process of developing a new, state-of-the-art practice facility and team headquarters. This group is deeply invested in wellness, longevity, and performance — not just for the current roster, but for Broncos alumni too. The way they’ve reengaged the alumni community speaks volumes about their respect for the franchise’s legacy.

This is what world-class ownership looks like. And based on everything I’ve seen — and how the Walton and Penner families operate across all areas of life and business — I believe they’ll continue to lead with a long-term, values-driven approach.

Then there’s George Paton.

George has one of the best eyes for talent in the NFL. He’s already brought foundational pieces to this team, and his ability to find value throughout the draft gives Broncos fans a lot of reasons to be optimistic. In the team’s pre-draft press conference, George said something that stood out to me: he’s never done more preparation for a draft in his career.

Why? Because he sees what this team can become. He sees the opportunity to close the gap with Kansas City. He sees a real chance to make an impact — and it starts Thursday night with that 20th pick.

And of course, there’s Coach Sean Payton.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: Sean is one of the best teachers I’ve ever played for. He’s not only a brilliant play caller, but he knows how to build a roster that fits his vision. Just look at his time in New Orleans — turning second- and third-rounders like Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara into All-Pros, or developing a seventh-round pick like Marques Colston into a cornerstone receiver.

Even here in Denver, we’re already seeing that vision take shape. Look at guys like Devaughn Vele. It’s clear Sean knows the kind of player who thrives in his system. His ability to identify talent and maximize it is a competitive advantage few coaches possess.

So yes — the draft matters. But what matters more is this:

The Broncos have the right ownership group.
The right general manager.
The right head coach.
And a culture that’s forming the foundation for something special.

As a former Bronco and Super Bowl champion in this city, I know what a winning organization looks like. What’s being built in Denver from the top down gives me confidence that the Broncos are on the right path.
