Steve Reed represented the Colorado Rockies through their first five seasons of existence and pitched in more games than any other for the franchise, spending half his 14-year career in purple. His 140 ERA+ is often overlooked, and remains a staggering figure during an era pitched mostly before the advent of the humidor at Coors Field. Steve Reed Award for Unsung Hero In a season void of multiple heroes during another disappointing season at the bottom of the National League West, the line between All-Star and also-ran often becomes blurred. Several players offered positive contributions that were largely overshadowed by all the losses, the presence of countless rookies and some glorious C.J. Cron moon shots. That is why an award…

And just like that, it’s all over. With a 6-1 loss to the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon, the Colorado Rockies finished their 2022 season with a 68-94 record (.420) and with sole possession of last place in the National League West. The first official offseason for Bill Schmidt as general manager brought about some big investments. Schmidt signed five free agents, swung a trade for a big league outfielder and locked up four Rockies to multi-year extensions before Opening Day. Extensions for Kyle Freeland and Daniel Bard during the season raised the total amount of new guaranteed money to $428 million following the end of the 2021 season. Despite the financial expenditure for a roster that appeared…

Colorado Rockies GM Bill Schmidt addressed the media on Saturday in the same dugout occupied by several of the prized prospects touted as the reason for optimism. Opening with remarks that thanked the fans for supporting his team, Schmidt highlighted the future of the franchise in the form of their farm system. “Needless to say, the season hasn’t met our expectations, but at the same point a lot of good things went on that don’t show up here every day,” before adding, “And I say that in terms of our minor leagues and some of the foundational pieces that we’re going to need going forward.” Schmidt spent significant amounts of the 14 minutes discussing the youth of the organization. There’s a sizable opportunity for the Colorado Rockies over the next three days. A trio of contests against the 61-82 Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field could help the 2022 squad from being on the wrong side of history. The 108-year-old ballpark nestled in a neighborhood on the Northside seems quaint, but it’s not the type of location that produces home runs. Wrigley Field has a home run factor of 98 since 2020, according to Baseball Savant. This means it allows less home runs than average, and is 16th overall among MLB’s 30 cathedrals.  Since the Rockies’s schedule takes them to San Francisco and Los Angeles to close out their season, now is the time to make up some ground and…

The Colorado Rockies have seven players who will reach free agency at season’s end. Though that group lacks the star power of last offseason’s duo of Trevor Story and Jon Gray, there’s one player who could be highly coveted by clubs looking to contend in 2023. Carlos Estévez may have a career earned run average of 4.67, but his upside over the years has suggested the potential of a closer. The 29-year-old has a 4.12 ERA and an ERA+ of 115 over the last two seasons, and going back to the start of the 2019 season shows he’s been equally as good: 4.38 ERA with a 113 ERA+. What’s most impressive about the 6’6″ right-hander is the durability Estévez has…

Pyrrhus of Epirus was a Greek king who was considered to be one the great commanders of all-time despite not being the wisest among his peers. It’s for the latter reason his name is given to the type of decision-making that can result in a win whilst suffering severe losses: a Pyrrhic victory. If the Colorado Rockies want to get...

Kris Bryant has another big day at the plate, but the story once again is Colorado’s bullpen coughing up a late lead. Which Brewers’ player now owns the Rockies? Patrick and Suzie discuss the interesting commentary by the scoreboard operators at American Family Field – aka Miller Park – before pondering which is worst: an inside-the-park grand slam or a bases-clearing wild pitch?
