This morning, Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar addressed the media for what felt like the 20th time since his team last saw game action. Bednar wasn’t his usual chatty self, there were actually several times he gave one-word or one-line answers. I asked him what he was looking for out of Sam Girard, given the way his postseason performance…...
Auston Matthews I wrote last week about Toronto’s Auston Matthews and Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl both eclipsing the 50-goal threshold. Well, Auston Matthews hasn’t stopped scoring since. Matthews now has 58 goals on the year, with 10 games still remaining, and is now the Toronto Maple Leafs’ single-season record holder for most goals in a season. Perhaps the most impressive feat…...
There’s never a dull week in the NHL. Trevor Zegras continues to do dope things, the playoffs are taking shape, it looks like Bowen Byram is on the road back, and we’ve got a pair of fifty goal-scorers. Let’s get caught up from last week in the NHL. Trevor Zegras This kid is something else. What I love about the…...
It’s not often that a team can insert five healthy players into the lineup from one game to the next, but the Avs may be doing just that on Saturday against Vegas. After a short practice to test out the digs outdoors at Lake Tahoe ahead of the game on Saturday, Avs coach Jared Bednar announced that all of the…...
Welcome to the Avs mailbag, where we answer whatever Avs questions you have on your mind. If you have any questions for the mailbag, leave them for Evan Rawal on Twitter, Discord, or respond in the comments. https://twitter.com/FlyByCygnus2112/status/1353386122680782851?s=20 For starters, the salary cap implications played a role in the Avs running 7 defensemen in one of the games, as they…...
Perhaps this is controversial, or perhaps it isn't, but let it be known: as of right now, Samuel Girard is the Avs #1 defenseman.
Still just 21 years old, Girard led the Avs in average time on ice at 21:19 a game, but where the staff trusted him more than any other player on the team is at even strength, where he averaged over a full minute more than the next closest player (Erik Johnson). While Jared Bednar and Nolan Pratt won't hesitate to put Girard on the ice with Cale Makar for offensive zone face-offs, they pretty consistently use him in defensive matchups against the other teams best players.
Pierre Edouard Bellemare – A Tying your career-high in goals and points halfway through the season isn’t a bad start to your Avs career. The goal was a little bit of a gift, but you take them any way you can get them. Important face-off win from him on the Cole goal. Andre Burakovsky – B He had a lot…...

Pierre Edouard Bellemare – D Bellemare got beaten for a few pucks along the boards on the game-tying goal, as it came to him a few times and he just got it taken off his stick. In late-game situations, you just cannot have that. Andre Burakovsky – D Quiet game from Burakovsky. He had one rush up the ice in…...
Pierre Edouard Bellemare – B+ Bellemare and his line looked really good now that he’s got his long lost brother Matt Calvert back. They pinned the Leafs down low several times and got the Avs momentum whenever they really needed it. The scoring has normalized for Bellemare, but the solid play overall is still there. Matt Calvert – B+ Did…...
Pierre Edouard Bellemare – B Outside of the delay of game late, Bellemare had a solid game overall. There was a scare with him blocking a shot but he seemed to make it okay. A dominant night in the face-off circle, winning 11 of 15. Ian Cole – A Cole has not been perfect on the penalty kill recently, but…...
Pierre Edouard Bellemare – C+ Bellemare was fairly invisible for the most part, I just had two memories of him in this one, one good and one bad. The bad was the penalty 200 feet from his own net. Those are tough ones to swallow. The good was a beautiful shot block on Patrick Kane alone in the slot after…...
Erik Johnson – B I feel like we’re at the point where if you don’t notice EJ out there, he’s doing his job, and he did that for over 23 minutes tonight. A quietly solid game from him. His guy ended up scoring on the first goal of the night, but that was a very flukey bounce to begin with.…...
The mystery is over.
Head Coach Jared Bednar hinted at it yesterday, but the first guy to get a shot at playing on the top line with Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog in Mikko Rantanen's absence? J.T. Compher.
The 24 year old Illinois native isn't looking to change his game too much, as he knows what makes him successful.
A relatively tame game through two periods took off in the third, with the Avs and Coyotes combining for four goals in the final 20, forcing the game to overtime, where Andre Burakovsky would end it with a beautiful shot. With the 3-2 victory, the Avs start the season 4-0 as they head onto a season-long road trip. How did…...
It wasn’t their prettiest game of the season, but the Avs got it done against a very good Boston Bruins team, winning 4-2 behind a tremendous performance from their goaltender Philipp Grubauer. The Avs are now off to a perfect 3-0 start and look to finish off the homestand on Saturday night with another win against the Arizona Coyotes. How…...
Breaking their goose egg this preseason, the Colorado Avalanche were able to get on the board, coming out ahead of the Minnesota Wild by a score of 3-2 in a shootout. How did each player perform? Let’s find out… Dan Renouf – B-: I’m not sure Renouf has much of a shot at making the team, but he’s making an impression…...
