Vic Fangio’s coaching staff is coming into focus.
The Broncos have hired former 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello as their new offensive coordinator, according to Adam Schefter. The 49ers originally denied the Broncos permission to interview Scangarello for the job, but eventually, the Broncos were able to get the interview.
Scangarello, 46, spent the last two seasons in San Francisco managing young quarterbacks who were thrown into the fire too early because of injuries. Of the three quarterbacks who started for the 49ers in 2018—Jimmy Garoppolo, C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens—only Garoppolo completed less than 60 percent of his passes. Despite losing their starting quarterback in the third game of the season, San Francisco still ranked in the top half of the league in total passing offense.
Scangarello’s appeal isn’t just the production he pulled from next-to-nobodies. He’s also the first real disciple of the Kyle Shanahan coaching tree. Scangarello joined Shanahan’s staff in Atlanta in 2016 as an offensive assistant to learn more about the young coordinator’s wrinkled West Coast-zone run offense. Scangarello jumped shift after one season to coordinate the Wagner College offense. When Shanahan took the top job in San Francisco, he hired Scangarello to coach his quarterbacks.
This is Scangarello’s first NFL coordinating job, though he’s held the role at five colleges over his 21-year coaching career. Of those 21 years, he’s only spent four in the NFL.
The Broncos’ previous offensive coordinator, Bill Musgrave, is still unemployed.
