It begins with a willingness to find the open net. It’s the markings of a goalscorer and reveals a drive fed only by hard work and perseverance. It can’t really be taught and is rewarded by instinct and ultimately effort. On July 27th Cam Wright – a 6’1″ right-shot winger and Ontario native – signed his first professional contract: an…...
We caught up with Colorado Avalanche prospect Sean Behrens at the beginning of the season. He was an incoming freshman at the University of Denver with only 10 regular-season games under his belt, and the Pioneers had just swept Western Michigan at home. We learned about the program, his role on the top powerplay unit (at which 7 of his…...
Defenseman Sean Behrens is in his first year at the University of Denver after he was selected 61st overall in the 2nd round of the 2021 NHL draft by the Colorado Avalanche. With the opportunity to watch the Pioneers’ series against WMU this last weekend, I was able to see his game up close in a high-scoring, undisciplined match-up. To…...
DENVER – The No. 1 ranked Denver Pioneers took on the Colorado College Tigers on Friday night in one of the greatest rivalries in college hockey. It hasn’t been much of a rivalry as of late as the Pioneers have won the last 14 matchups. That streak ended as the Tigers scored late in the third period to take it…...
On the second night of the matchup between the No. 1 Denver Pioneers and the No. 3 North Dakota Fighting Hawks it was a different type of hockey game than the previous night. The Fighting Hawks had a desire to play physical which led to too many penalties and the Pioneers got to put their skill on full display. It was a 1-1 hockey game heading into the third period but the Pioneers came out like a team on a mission, scoring three goals in the third period to win 4-1.
One of the greatest rivalries in college hockey never disappoints, but this wasn't your average UND vs. DU game, this was the last two national champions going at it. It was also the No. 1 ranked Denver Pioneers against the No. 3 North Dakota Fighting Hawks. And it was another great hockey game, with the Fighting Hawks scoring the game-winner with just over two minutes left in the game to win 5-4.
DENVER – The No. 3 ranked Denver Pioneers took on the No. 1 team in the nation, the St. Cloud Huskies, on Friday night and the game was as advertised. It was back and forth the whole game but in the end, the Pios were able to pull out a 4-2 victory after getting swept last week. “I thought our…...
DENVER – The No. 1 ranked Denver Pioneers handled the Lake Superior State Lakers 5-1, thanks in large part to the new guys, freshmen Dayton Rasmussen, Griffin Mendel and Jakko Heikkinen. Rasmussen stopped 15 shots, more than good enough for his first NCAA win, and Mendel and Heikkinen netted their first NCAA goals. The Lakers struck first nine minutes into…...
Very few people in Magness Arena knew who Nick Kossoff was before the game between the Denver Pioneers and Lake Superior State Lakers started. But most, if not all, know who he is now.
The Denver Pioneers came out of the gates pumped up after watching their National Championship banner go up in the rafters during pre-game ceremonies. They were hard to stop, hard to even get the puck from.
CHICAGO – Hockey has been a growing sport in Colorado since the Avalanche won Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001. But if you ask the players on the Denver Pioneers that grew up in Colorado, their first hockey memories were when DU won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005. That’s when college hockey became a big deal in Colorado once…...
CHICAGO – People love to talk about the stars, that’s how sports are covered. Will Butcher, Troy Terry, Henrik Borgström and Dylan Gambrell are all outstanding hockey players, but the depth that the Denver Pioneers possess is the reason they’ve got to this point and it’s the depth that will help them win the National Championship. “I think all…...
Two games, for all the marbles. That’s what the Denver Pioneers are looking at as they get ready to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Thursday night. It all comes down to this. Every DU fan remembers last year’s trip to the Frozen Four, which ended in disappointment. But what it did for this team is give them…...
DENVER – Hockey goalies have the most interesting job in sports. There are very few personalities in this world that want to stop pucks for a living; it’s even rarer to find one that’s really good at it. Most teams will look for height when recruiting goaltenders. The number of goaltenders under six feet tall is few and far…...
The No. 1 ranked Denver Pioneers got their road to the Frozen Four started on Saturday against the Michigan Tech Huskies. The Pios jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and never looked back from there, wrapping up a 5-2 first round victory. It was deja vu all over again for DU hockey fans as most will…...
The Denver Pioneers are the top team in the NCHC conference. Tonight, they faced the last-placed team in the Colorado College Tigers. Obviously, these teams aren’t strangers to one another, and historically, Denver has had the upper hand. Since the teams’ first face off in 1950, the Pioneers have a 173-116-17 record against Colorado College. Denver came into tonight…...
With their tenth straight win, the Denver Pioneers win the 2017 Penrose Cup as the regular season NCHC champion.
