It was 25 years ago that Larry Walker won the franchise’s first National League MVP Award thanks to an NL-leading 49 home runs and top-marks in on-base and slugging percentage. Walker was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2021 and remains the only player in Rockies history to reach Cooperstown or to have won an MVP Award. Larry Walker Award for Most Valuable Player Valuable is a word that can have multiple interpretations to different people. In sports, value is used to describe performance as a matter of results – in both counting numbers and rate statistics – as well as performance in relation to that player’s contract. Should a player be acquired via trade, then their value…

Brendan Rodgers needs to make room for his first piece of hardware as a big leaguer. Rodgers was selected as the Rawlings National League Gold Glove Award winner at second base on Tuesday, the first of his career. Defensive metrics loved what Rodgers was able to do in his first full-season since debuting with Colorado in 2019. His 22 defensive runs saved were more than any second baseman in 2022 and most at the position since 2012 when Darwin Barney of the Chicago Cubs had 28. His 3.0 dWAR (defensive wins-above-replacement, according to Baseball Reference) was tied with 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes for most in MLB this season and third-most in Rockies’ history behind only Clint Barmes (3.2 in 2006) and…

Despite making the fifth-most errors as a team in all of Major League Baseball in 2022, two members of the Colorado Rockies infield have been nominated for the Rawlings’ Gold Glove Award. On Thursday it announced that Brendan Rodgers is one of three finalists at second base while Ryan McMahon is a finalist at third base. Rodgers, 26, is a first-time finalist for the award that recognizes the top defenders in the game in each league. Though he tied for the most errors (10) in the National League among second basemen, several of the defensive metrics consider him to be much better than that number. Outs Above Average (OAA), created by Baseball Savant, has five second basemen ahead of Rodgers…

For every fan who sat through all 162 games this season for the Colorado Rockies, you should be saluted. Despite witnessing the fifth-worst season in franchise history (68-94, .420), there were moments that made an indelible mark on all our memories, even if you experienced it the morning after. That, ultimately, is the reward for committing to a team: memories that leave a mark in our minds and make an impact on our hearts. The Heartstrings There are no any shortages of heartfelt moments in our National Pastime. The start to the 2022 season captured hearts in Denver in an unexpected way.  There was the first full-capacity Opening Day in three years – with the city’s own Kyle Freeland given…

When we look back on the Colorado Rockies’ 2022 season in a decade, what will be remembered most? Is there a chance we may not recall much of anything from the slate of 162 games we just witnessed? Any time a team fails to win the World Series – there are always 29 teams in this situation in a given year – there will always be room to contextualize what was askew in addition to what went properly or even better than expected. We can learn a lot about 2022 by reflecting upon the 2012 Rockies. That squad from a decade ago lost a club-record 98 games. They were three years removed from their last postseason appearance (2009) and would…

Germán Márquez was masterful against the Dodgers, striking out 8 (season-high) and giving up just one hit, to snap a seven-game losing streak. Daniel Bard slams the icing on the cake with strikeouts for all six outs. How rare was his performance? What even more rare event transpired on Saturday night? Friday and Saturday were embarrassing, but which was worse? And who has the longest name in Rockies history? At 6’5” and 226 lbs, Michael Toglia was built to hit baseball a long, long way. Toglia launched three home runs with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes on August 27. That gave him 30 for 2022, third-most this season among Colorado Rockies minor leaguers. After only 97 games at Double-A earlier in the year, Toglia set the Hartford Yard Goats single-season record with 23 home runs. (Brenton Doyle later tied this mark.) As much as this appeared to indicate he was ready for the big leagues, the UCLA product could have made his MLB debut much earlier. And not because of his bat. “I think his time in Denver is going to be soon,” Todd Helton said of Toglia to Danielle…
