Another day, another CU commitment.

Offensive tackle Drew Perez announced on Twitter Thursday that he will attend the University of Colorado. Perez is entering his senior season at Southlake Carroll High School, a powerhouse in Dallas. He is the 13th commitment in Colorado’s 2023 class, which is currently ranked 25th in the nation by 247Sports, primarily because its large size.

At 6-foot-8 and 330 pounds with a full year before he arrives in Boulder, it’s easy to see be excited by Perez’s size. He’s more of a lumbering lineman than a true athlete on the edge, as you’d expect from a tackle his size, but it’s easy to see him developing into a dominant run blocker if he puts in more work in the weight room. His size and experience in one of the most talented leagues in the country give him great upside.

Colorado is the only Power 5 offer for Perez as of his commitment, but more could be on the way. 247Sports notes that Auburn, Minnesota and Washington are among those with interest in Perez and San Diego State and Tulane are among those who have offered him. Perez hasn’t been rated 247Sports or Rivals.

Perez is the second tackle to commit to CU in the 2023 cycle, joining Naquil Betrand out of Philadelphia. After Betrand committed to Colorado in March, he received offers from Texas A&M, Georgia, Penn State and others. He announced a new top-10 list earlier this month, meaning that he just as easily could wind up somewhere other than Boulder. Colorado will hope that Perez doesn’t receive the same boost in interest that Betrand did after his commitment.

At 6-foot-7 and 310 pounds, Betrand is a massive prospect at tackle, just like Perez. If the Buffs lose out on Betrand, Perez should serve as a suitable replacement. If CU can hold onto both, the Buffs could have a supersized set of bookends in a few years.
