Jonathon Cooper is back with the Denver Broncos.
The 28-year-old outside linebacker missed the end of the team’s offseason training program because of a pair of arrests in early June. The court case is still pending with Cooper’s next appearance a month away, but the Broncos welcomed Cooper back with the rest of the team this week. When the Broncos held their first practice of the season on Wednesday, Cooper was on the field.
Cooper’s charges stem from multiple alleged incidents involving his girlfriend in early June. The most serious charge is a count of felony strangulation, which would carry a sentence of two to eight years if Cooper is convicted. A decision from the court could be months away.
Even if Cooper is ruled innocent, the NFL could suspend him. The league often waits to make its decision until after the legal process has ended, in part to ensure that it has as much information as possible.
