ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — NFL football is a game of inches.

On Sunday Night Football, Riley Moss came up on the wrong side of those inches.

“I was in great position,” Moss said.

Despite near-perfect coverage, Marcus Mariota lobbed a ball up for Treylon Burks in the end zone, and Burks made the catch of his career.

“That one-handed catch, props to him,” Moss said. “Hell of a catch. Hell of a throw.”

Moss has caught plenty of tough breaks this season. His resilience to bounce back from those tough breaks and make big plays for his team, like he did on Sunday, has been crucial. At cornerback, there is no time to look in the rearview mirror.

And his Denver Broncos are taking on a similar personality.

The Washington Commanders provided some body blows, but in the end the Broncos got the last laugh on Sunday. Nik Bonitto batted away the game-deciding two-point conversion, and the Broncos left the nation’s capital with a 27-26 overtime win.

“We’ve been in that position so much that now it’s kind of second nature,” Moss said.

The Broncos are on a nine-game win streak, the second-best mark in the NFL. And, for the first time in NFL win streak, they’ve built a nine-game win streak despite trailing in every one of those games.

How have they done it?

“Being able to not break and be able to continue to chip away and finish the game,” Moss said.

The win streak started with a comeback against the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. The Broncos seemed to stumble upon their identity in that game.

But Moss points to a different moment.

“I would go back and say that block last year with the Chiefs in Kansas City,” Moss said.

The Broncos seemed to have beaten the rival Chiefs. The Broncos faced a two-point deficit but had the ball in Chiefs territory. They lined up a 35-yard field goal for the win as time expired. A win was in their grasp.

The kick was blocked. The Broncos lost.

“I think that was kind of like, we’re done,” Moss said. “It’s time to change it.”

The Broncos, of course, would love to trade in their reputation for late-game wins in exchange for easy wins, but a win is a win, even if one way is more stressful than the other.

“We don’t enjoy being that close at the end of the game,” Moss said. “I’m gonna lose hair. I’m gonna end up bald at 35. But when we get in that position, we’ve been there and we know how to handle it.”
