A Denver Broncos quarterback was arrested last night, following Von Miller’s Halloween party at Gothic Theatre.
Police arrested Chad Kelly for trespassing early Tuesday morning, according to a press release and affidavit from the Englewood Police Department. Kelly appeared in court Tuesday morning on first-degree trespassing charges. He is now subject to discipline from the NFL and his job in Denver may be in jeopardy.
According to the press release and an affidavit by the Englewood Police Department, the homeowner called the police at 1:16 a.m. when he noticed a man standing outside his residence. While police were en route, the man entered the residence and sat down on a couch just inside the front door, next to a woman and her young child. The man was mumbling incoherently.
The man who called the police hit the intruder in the back with a vacuum tube and chased him out of the house. The homeowner claims both doors were locked, but police found no signs of forced entry.
Police found Chad Kelly a few blocks away in front of Gothic Theatre—the venue of Von Miller’s Halloween party, Monday night—and arrested him. The press release says Kelly was in a Black SUV. Kelly matched the description given by the victims, which aligned with what police saw on security footage of the incident. Police brought the homeowner to the scene and confirmed Kelly was the intruder.
The Denver Broncos released the following statement:
“We are disappointed that Chad Kelly was arrested early this morning. Our organization has been in contact with Chad, and we are in the process of gathering more information.”
Kelly beat out former-first round pick Paxton Lynch for the Broncos’ backup quarterback job during training camp. He took the first regular-season snap of his career against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 6. He subbed in for Case Keenum amid “Kelly” chants to kneel out the time remaining in the first half.
The Broncos drafted Kelly with the last pick of the 2017 draft, but he missed his entire rookie season due to injury. He played collegiately at Clemson before transferring to junior college following a fallout with head coach Dabo Swinney. After winning the Junior College National Championship, he transferred to Ole Miss. Prior to arriving on campus, Kelly was arrested for allegedly telling a bouncer, “I’m going to go to my car and get my AK-47 and spray this place.”
Kelly is the nephew of Hall of Fame Bills quarterback Jim Kelly. Chad Kelly grew up near Buffalo and was a four-time national Punt, Pass and Kick champion and a four-star recruit as a dual-threat quarterback out of high school.
