BOULDER — The Colorado Buffaloes hosted a march through Boulder Friday morning.
Participants gathered at the intersection of College Avenue and 13th Street just before 9 this morning to protest the death of George Floyd, a Minneapolis man who was killed by police officers last week.
Just after 9, Buffs head coach Karl Dorrell made the following remarks:
Wide receiver K.D. Nixon was an important part of organizing the march and the senior was at the front of the crowd for most of the day. He and a group composed primarily of receivers led the way at the start. Laviska Shenault Jr., who now plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars, was right next to him.
Nixon started the first chant of the day, which was “Black Lives Matter.”
The march was less than a mile long and upward of 1,000 people joined the Buffs.
Nixon, for most of the march, was the focal point.
The marchers arrived at Central Park at about 9:30 and a trucked packed with bagged lunches was waiting. Buffs representatives brought sandwiches to homeless people in the park.
Here’s freshman quarterback Brendon Lewis giving out a lunch.
Lewis marched with a group of quarterbacks that included former Buff Steven Montez — who now plays for the Washington Redskins — and Lewis’ primary competitor for the starting job, Tyler Lytle.
After the lunches were passed around, the crowd gathered and freshman Kaylie Chiaverini — daughter of offensive coordinator Darrin Chiaverini — led the crowd in chants. Then Nixon took over and gave a speech.
Prior to dispersing, the entire crowd took a knee for 8 minutes and 46 seconds — the amount of time that a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on George Floyd’s neck last week, killing him.
The entire event lasted about an hour.
