Junior Colorado Buffaloes safety Aaron Maddox entered the transfer portal Monday afternoon, sources confirmed to DNVR. He will retain two years of NCAA eligibility, as he only participated in four games this season. Maddox may apply for a waiver so he doesn’t have to sit out either of those two years.
Maddox did not travel with the Buffs to Pullman for Saturday’s contest against Washington State. The game would have been his fifth of the season, making him ineligible to redshirt, therefore burning one of his two remaining years of eligibility.
Maddox has been listed as Colorado’s starting free safety on every depth chart this season. During a game against Air Force, Maddox slid into a misting fan on the sideline while making a tackle and cut his leg. The lower-leg laceration kept him out of the next two games and junior Derrion Rakestraw made the starts in Maddox’s place.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound safety was born in Tucson, Ariz. but graduated from North Augusta High School in North Augusta, S.C. He attended Pima Community College prior to transferring to Colorado for his sophomore season.
Maddox played in all 12 games as a sophomore, making 11 tackles, including one for a loss. In four games this season, Maddox made 22 total tackles, including one for a loss. He also forced two fumbles, which is tied for the second-most in the Pac-12.
