Colorado is scheduled to play Texas A&M in Week 2 of the upcoming season, and the game will be played at Empower Field in Denver, according to a release from CU Monday morning. The original contract between CU and Texas A&M included two games between the teams; Sept. 19, 2020 in College Station Texas, and Sept. 11, 2021 in either Denver or Boulder. The 2020 game was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
By moving the game to the Brocnos’ stadium, Colorado should be able to sell more tickets. Capacity at Empower Field is listed at 76,125 compared to just 53,316 at Folsom Field. Additionally, Colorado athletic director Rick George has said he thinks playing games in Denver could help grow support in the city.
The game won’t be included in CU’s season-ticket packages but season-ticket holders will have the first opportunity to buy tickets.
Kickoff times for all of Colorado’s games are still to be determined but times for the first three games will be announced by May 31.
Texas A&M finished the 2020 season ranked No. 4 in the country by both the AP Poll and the Coaches’ Poll. However, four-year starting quarterback Kellen Mond opted to enter the NFL Draft, as did several key pieces in the trenches, so this Aggies team won’t look quite like the last few.
Colorado will open its season at Folsom Field with a Week 1 matchup with the Northern Colorado Bears. The Buffs will close non-conference play in Week 3 with a home game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
The rest of Colorado’s schedule has not been released by the Pac-12. The conference announced its 2020 schedule in January of last year, so a full schedule could be on the way soon.
