BOULDER — When J.T. Shrout went down with a non-contact knee injury, Colorado was left with three quarterbacks on the roster, all of whom are freshmen.

That left a question: Who is Colorado's emergency quarterback?

"I assume I'd be the first one they'd reach out to," senior Matt Lynch told DNVR on Tuesday.

BOULDER — J.T. Shrout left Saturday’s scrimmage on a cart after his knee buckled during a move against air. Over the weekend, Shrout underwent an MRI and on Monday, Karl Dorrell gave reporters a little bit of information. “He does have a significant injury,” Dorrell said. “He will be out for a period of time.” Dorrell didn’t say exactly what…...

BOULDER — Colorado held the first of two fall scrimmages on Saturday, as the Buffs gear up for the 2021 season. The scrimmage was the only time during camp that media will be permitted to watch the Buffs play 11-on-11 football, giving us a taste of what is to come. Colorado ran over 90 plays, according to Karl Dorrell, which…...

BOULDER — On Tuesday, Casey Roddick told DNVR that the offensive line’s goal was two 1,000-yard rushers.. and that three would be ideal. Well, on Thursday, freshman wide receiver Brenden Rice shared a similar goal. “Any three of us with at least 1,000 yards,” Rice said of CU’s receivers. The goal will be tough to reach, considering Colorado has only…...

BOULDER — Sophomore guard Casey Roddick has big goals for 2021. He wants to be first-team All-Pac-12. He wants to win the Pac-12. He wants to win the Rose Bowl. And for the offensive line as a whole, there’s more. “We want to go above and beyond the goals that we set last year,” Roddick told DNVR on Tuesday. “As…...

BOULDER — Five days of fall camp are done and Colorado is putting the pads on tomorrow!

New defensive coordinator Chris Wilson, who took over for Tyson Summers after the season, spoke to reporters on Monday. It was the first time he'd taken the podium since camp started on Thursday. DNVR also caught up with defensive linemen Jalen Sami and Terrance Lang in exclusive interviews.

Reminder: Reporters aren't allowed to watch practice, so these notes are all based on what coaches and players told DNVR after practice.

Here's what we learned.

BOULDER — Two weeks ago, when the Pac-12 media picked Terrance Lang as a second-teamer in its annual preseason all-conference team, Colorado’s junior defensive end was uninterested. “I really didn’t pay attention to it,” Lang told DNVR on Monday. “And it was second-team so I didn’t… it was kind of… I don’t like all that.” Lang didn’t say exactly what…...

BOULDER — J.T. Shrout is familiar with quarterback competitions, but he says that this one is different.

"I think this is the first time I've really been given a legitimate chance," he told reporters Saturday in his first media availability of fall camp. "At UT the last few years you kind of had a starter every year, so you're going into it playing for a backup job."

That gives this competition a different feel.

BOULDER — Colorado is in the midst of a quarterback competition for the second-consecutive season.

This time around, freshman Brendon Lewis has a 50-50 chance to win the job. That wasn't the case in 2020, when he was relegated to third-team reps while Colorado's more-experience signal-callers dueled it out.

"It was hard," Lewis said Saturday, the first day that the quarterbacks spoke with reporters during fall camp. "I would say it was hard but I'd say the biggest thing I got out of that was watching Sam (Noyer) and Tyler (Lytle) in there and getting mental reps. That's the biggest thing is getting mental reps so that when you go in there you're not confused and don't know what to do."

BOULDER — 26 days to game day!

Colorado put on shoulder pads for the first time during fall camp on Saturday, and full pads are on the way on Tuesday.

Saturday was also the first time that the two quarterbacks who are competing for the starting job have spoken with the media since camp opened up. Head coach Karl Dorrell took a day off from talking to reporters, sending quarterbacks coach Danny Langsdorf to the podium instead.

Here are our (quarterback-heavy) notes from Day 4 of fall ball:

BOULDER — Three practices down, 22 to go!

We're still in the early stages of Colorado's 2021 fall camp, but we're inching closer and closer to full pads, a decision on the starting quarterback and, eventually, an actual football game.

A reminder: media isn't allowed to watch practices, so I don't have a first-hand account of what happened on the field today. However, I heard from head coach Karl Dorrell and spoke with safety Mark Perry and cornerback Christian Gonzalez after practice.

Here's what I learned.

BOULDER — Day 1 of fall camp is in the books!

Colorado is hitting the field for 25 practices during the month of August, leading up to its season opener under the Folsom Field lights against Northern Colorado on Friday, Sept. 3.

Media isn't allowed to watch the practices, outside of a pair during the middle of camp, so we don't have any first-hand accounts of what went down. However, head coach Karl Dorrell, All-American linebacker Nate Landman and reigning Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year Jarek Broussard took to the podium after practice on Thursday to talk about what happened and all sorts of other things.

Here's what you need to know.
