BOULDER — Bad news, Buffs fans.

Sophomore Colorado quarterback J.T. Shrout was carted off of Folsom Field Saturday with a non-contact injury after grabbing his knee. The injury came during the first of two fall scrimmages, and the only 11-on-11 session that will be open to the media this spring.

“His knee buckled a little bit, I’m sure he’s scared a little bit,” Dorrell said. “We don’t know what the extent is. We’re hopeful that it’s not too serious. No one was around and he kind of did the move on air. It’s one of those things in football sometimes that happens.”

Shrout is in the midst of a competition with second-year true freshman Brendon Lewis for Colorado’s starting job. While the extent of Shrout’s injury is still unknown, Lewis would become the starter if Shrout is out for an extended period of time. Luckily for Colorado, Lewis played well on Saturday, throwing three touchdown passes.

“I thought B-Lew did some really good things,” Dorrell said. “Made some good plays with his feet and also made some good throws.”

If Shrout is out, then Colorado’s quarterbacks room becomes even more thin. The only other quarterbacks on the roster are true freshmen Drew Carter and Jordan Woolverton. Woolverton is a walk-on.

“We have what we have,” Dorrell said. “If he’s going to be out an extended period of time, we have three to work with. Drew has to get more reps to get him ready to play. That’s our jobs as coaches to do that. Jordan Woolverton will be the third.”
