In the final edition of Buffs Camp Notes, we break down the important (and not so important) storylines from the last few days.
The offensive line isn’t set in stone
The Buffs released their first depth chart of the season and there weren’t any surprises on the offensive line.
LT: Arlington Hambright
LG: Kary Kutsch
C: Tim Lynott
RG: Colby Pursell
RT: William Sherman
This was the group that made the most sense, because of their combination of talent and experience. But offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic said it could change after he sees them on the field.
“I’m not 100 percent sure that’s the lineup we’re going to have 2-4 weeks from now,” Kapilovic said.
The difference between practice and a real game is massive, so Kapilovic wants to see who steps up and who struggles before he fully commits to a starting group. He likes the competition and thinks the group is improving, but this offensive line is far from a finished product.
“We’re making progress,” Kapilovic said. “But you just feel like there’s so far to go.”
Mixed feelings about school starting
Sometimes we forget that college football players are student-athletes.
After Monday’s practice, the Buffs showered and went to class for the first time this semester. Is grad transfer Mikial Onu excited?
“No,” he said Sunday. “I feel like I did my due diligence.”
Onu graduated from SMU this spring before transferring to play for Colorado in his final year of eligibility. He took 34 credits in his final year at SMU so he could graduate early. Now Onu, still 21, is a graduate student with two classes on his schedule. What are they?
“To be honest with you, I really don’t know,” he said. “Organizational Leadership five-zero-zero-something.”
He figured he could learn his schedule and buy textbooks after Sunday’s practice.
Aaron Maddox, the Buffs’ other starting safety feels differently about school starting.
“I’m excited about it,” Maddox said. “I’m glad to be back in my realm, be on my schedule. I like being on a routine.”
“He’s lying,” Onu said. “He’s lying. He’s not telling the truth. People say that, but I’m not going to say that. That’s a lie. I’m not ready for school.”
The uniform schedule is decided
Nike hooks the Buffs up.
With four helmet colors, four colors of pants and three jersey colors, the Buffs could wear a different uniform combination every game for four seasons without a repeat.
Earlier in camp, K.D. Nixon gave BSN Denver a list of his favorites:
- Black Helmet-Black Jersey-Black Pants
- White-White-White
- Gray-Gray-Gray
- Gray-White-Gray
He added that he likes some of the combos the Buffs haven’t used yet. Are any of those coming this season?
“I ain’t gonna lie; I wish,” Nixon said. “I hope, I hope, I hope.”
Mel Tucker doesn’t seem as interested in the uniforms as Nixon, but on Sunday the Buffs’ coach said he picked out the team’s uniforms for the season over the summer.
“It’s already in the books,” Tucker said. “We don’t have to worry about that.”
We’ll have to wait to see what Tucker wants his guys to wear on gamedays, but he did make one notable change to his own wardrobe this week: No more straw hat.
“That’s a camp hat,” Tucker said. “This is game week.”
