ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos‘ 16-point comeback victory over the Los Angeles Rams wasn’t without a fair bit of drama.
In the final two minutes of the Broncos’ 30-26 win over the Rams, Los Angeles was called for five penalties. That is tied for the most by any team in that situation since 2000, according to ESPN Research.
There were two penalties specifically that were deemed highly controversial. The first was Rams‘ cornerback Josh Wallace being called for defensive pass interference against Pat Bryant, which not only negated his game-winning interception, but gave the Broncos an automatic first down, leading to Bo Nix‘s game-winning touchdown.
The second controversial penalty was just three plays later, when Rams’ safety Quentin Lake was called for illegal use of hands, hands to the face against Evan Engram.
“I think there were two calls really, that I guess a lot of people were looking at,” Sean Payton said. “One over on Pat Bryant’s side and the one that was a little bit later.”
Both penalties gave the Broncos’ automatic first downs following their failed third-down attempts.

On Monday, after having time to review the tape following the win, Payton addressed the controversial penalties.
