Another Big Ten tight end is headed to Denver.
The Broncos drafted Wisconsin tight end Troy Fumagalli with the 156th pick in the draft. Denver came into the day with the 149th pick but traded it to Seattle for 156 and 226.
The Broncos tight end depth chart is packed with former Big Ten talent: Jake Butt is from Michigan, Jeff Heuerman is from Ohio State and Austin Traylor is also from Wisconsin.
Fumagalli was a captain for the Badgers—the sixth college captain in Denver’s seven picks so far—where he totaled 93 receptions for 1127 yards over his junior and senior seasons.
Fumagalli isn’t the type of freak athlete tight end that is taking over the NFL. He’s a solid route runner who consistently finds the weak spot in zone defenses. His blocking improved over time, but he’s still overmatched by big linemen despite his 6-foot-5, 245 pound frame.
The tight end played for the Broncos’ coaching staff on the North team at the Senior Bowl, as did fellow Broncos draft picks DaeSean Hamilton and Isaac Yiadom.
The Broncos have three picks remaining in the draft. They were slated to make another selection at 160th overall, but traded the pick to the Rams for 183 and 217. The Broncos also have pick 227.
