After purging their assistant coaching staff, the Broncos are starting to put the pieces back together.
Wednesday evening, the Broncos hired Sean Kugler to coach their offensive line, as first reported by Lou Romano of CBS 4 in El Paso. Former Broncos offensive line coach Jeff Davidson was one of six assistant coaches fired on Monday. The Broncos’ line allowed 52 sacks in 2017, the fourth-most in the league. Their 104 quarterback hits allowed were the eighth-most.
Kugler has 27 years of coaching experience, including 11 in the NFL with the Lions, Bills and Steelers working with tight ends and offensive linemen. He was the Boise State Broncos offensive line coach in 2006, when former-Bronco Ryan Clady was a member of the football team. His personality has drawn comparisons to the Broncos’ defensive line coach Bill Kollar, who is one of the Denver’s rowdiest coaches.
For four and a half years, Kugler was the head coach of the UTEP Miners, his alma mater, before an 0-5 start to this season forced his resignation.
Kugler had a short professional playing career. After going undrafted in 1989, he signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent, but a concussion in training camp ended his NFL career. He later played one season in the World League of American Football.
