ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos 12th day of training camp is in the books. Here are my raw notes released minutes after practice wrapped up.
No more Waddling
—Jaylen Waddle hadn’t been on the practice field since August 5, when he walked off the field and did not return
—On Monday, however, No. 17 was back
—Not only did Waddle participate in practice, he made a huge leap as he participated in the team portion of practice
—He was wearing a white sleeve over nearly the entirety of his left leg, but did not appear to be limited in any way

—When Waddle got injured two weeks ago, Sean Payton stated it was “muscle tightness”
—Since Monday’s practice was closed to fans, the media isn’t allowed to report on specifics of practice, but it’s safe to say that his connection with Bo Nix remains strong, despite being sidelined for nearly two weeks
—The head coach isn’t concerned about the chemistry with Nix and Waddle being disrupted by his absence
—Payton said, “I think we’ve got a lot of time still. We got good work this week, this weekend. There’s been a lot of time on task already… He’s coming along really good. We’ll see how this week unfolds”
—Payton added the Broncos are “being smart” with Waddle’s injury
—It was a welcome sign to see the Broncos’ speedy playmaker back on the field on Monday
CENTERED
—On Monday, the Broncos not only got their starting center back, but also their backup center too
—Luke Wattenberg returned to practice for the first time since suffering an injury in practice two weeks ago to the day

—Wattenberg participated in drills, which was an encouraging step
—Alex Forsyth also returned to practice and participated in team period
—Last week, the team also lost their third-string center Michael Deiter to a season-ending quad injury
ANOTHER STEP FOR MARVIN MIMS JR
—It’s been over a week since Marvin Mims Jr. pulled up running a go route
—While he wasn’t fully back on Monday, he took another step in the right direction

—Mims participated in stretch and was with the receivers during drills
—However, shortly after, he went to the side field
—A source told DNVR that Mims is doing well and is not expected to be out much longer
DREW SANDERS SIDELINED
—While most of the injury news was positive on Monday, there was one player who did not practice that was healthy during Friday’s preseason game
—Drew Sanders did not participate in any part of Monday’s practice and was on the side field for the entirety of practice
—Sanders had a sack against the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night
COLEMAN’S COOKIN’
—Jonah Coleman had a team-best six yards per carry in the first preseason game on Friday night
—After four carries for 24 yards, Payton had seen enough. Coleman’s night was over
—Payton expanded that thought on Monday, saying, “There was a point, I think he had two or three carries and, ‘Alright I’ve see enough. I’ve seen enough here. It’s just your instincts relative to your evening and who is playing. I didn’t need to see additional evidence of what I’ve been seeing for three weeks. We do the three phases, but then we do within each phase who are the potential early outs in each phase and all of that”
—That’s quite a compliment from the head coach that a rookie only needed to show him four impressive carries

—“Good balance. A real good elusive runner for his size. I would say good short-area quickness and good balance. The other night we had a few good examples of that,” Payton added
—On Monday, Payton was asked about a potential Maurice Jones-Drew comp for Coleman: “I remember Maurice. There’s a number of backs that have been built like him. I’m not ready to comp a young player that early, but I like his balance. You don’t feel a young player”
OTHER NEWS AND NOTES
—Speaking of Coleman, after Monday’s practice, RJ Harvey made a bold statement, saying the Broncos want to have the best running back room in the NFL

—The film from Friday’s first preseason game was “good in a lot of areas” including the intent and focus, according to the head coach. Payton did point to operations and techniques that could be cleaned up. But overall, he was pleased. “It was good”
—Leading up to Friday’s second preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, the team will have two “good days” of practice on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday’s practice will be “more Green Bay driven”
—It’s too early to say if Levelle Bailey will be back this year after suffering a broken leg on Friday. “That would be tough to answer right now”
—Payton was asked if the Broncos will bring somebody in to replace Bailey and he simply said, “We’ll see”
