Broncos make a roster move in wake of Shane Ray injury

ENGLEWOOD — The Broncos added much-needed pass-rushing depth on Saturday morning, signing 26-year-old linebacker Danny Mason, as first reported by Adam Caplan of ESPN.

The move comes in wake of the news that Shane Ray will miss the next six-to-eight weeks with a torn ligament in his wrist. Shaq Barrett, the Broncos’ primary backup to Ray and Von Miller, is also injured. Mason will add depth to a depleted linebacker room

Mason was a four-year starter Texas A&M-Commerce, where he was twice named All-Lone Star Conference and made 280 total tackles.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound linebacker declared for the 2013 NFL draft but wasn’t selected. He spent the next season as a graduate assistant in Commerce while he finished his degree.

In 2014, Mason played for the Colorado Ice and Texas Revolution of the Indoor Football League.

Mason signed a futures contract with the Broncos in early 2015 and stayed on Denver’s practice squad until Sept. 29 of that year. He was signed to the Bears’ practice squad two months later, where he stayed for the remainder of the season. Mason spent the 2016 season on the Bears’ injured reserve with a knee injury.

In a corresponding move, the Broncos released tight end Henry Krieger-Coble. Denver signed Krieger-Coble as an undrafted free agent last season. He spent the first 15 weeks of the season on the team’s practice squad, before playing the final two games of the season.

Mason will wear No. 47.
