“What makes this play great” is a brand new series I will be doing here at DNVR in which I break down in detail a single play, moment, or sequence from a Denver Nuggets game and explain all of the subtle details that you might’ve missed the first time around. You can check out episode one, two and three from earlier this season.

Today’s episode is on three different reads and actions out of the corner offense, an elbow-entry offense that was popularized by Rick Adelman. David Adelman, Rick’s son, is an assistant coach on the Denver Nuggets’ coaching staff and someone Michael Malone has referred to as the unofficial offensive coordinator.

The corner offense has a near unlimited amount of actions, reads, and combinations that a team can run out of the basic framework but in today’s episode, I go over one of the most common options that utilizes a point guard and two “bigs.” It is an action that highlights Jamal Murray’s phenomenal screening and the ability for guys like Murray, Nikola Jokic, and Paul Millsap to read each other and the defense in split seconds to make minor adjustments to create quick advantages.
