Buffs Roundup: Soccer opens Pac-12 play with win

BOULDER – Several sports had some time off in what was a quiet week around campus. Now, it’s time to transition into Pac-12 play.

Here’s what happened:

Football

The Buffs enjoyed a quiet week during their bye but had some excitement Sunday morning when they learned they received enough AP Top 25 votes to essentially place them at No. 33.

Looking ahead, the team takes on Arizona on Saturday, in an early-season battle for the top of the Pac-12 South.

Soccer

The Buffs improved to a 9-1-0 mark on the season as they took down Arizona 2-1 in double OT during their first Pac-12 game.

Traveling to Tucson, conference play opened with a bang as both Arizona and Colorado battled back and forth for the majority of the game, but it was the play of a familiar name that pushed the Buffs on top.

Taylor Kornieck knocked in two goals, one in the 38th minute and one on a penalty kick in the 106th that gave the Buffs the victory. The two goals put her season total at eight to go along with five assists and a tremendous start to the season.

Moving forward, the Buffs with host the Oregon schools at Prentup field on Thursday and Sunday as they take on Oregon and Oregon State, respectively.

Volleyball

The volleyball team dropped to 8-4 overall as they lost two games last week against conference rivals Utah and Oregon State.

On Wednesday against No. 18 ranked Utah, the Buffs lost 0-3 behind a fairly decisive victory. It took the Buffs into the second set to get a rhythm, and at that point, it seemed too late.

Then, on Friday, Colorado lost again. This time it was a 1-3 loss to Oregon State as the Buffs took the first set just to drop three straight. The lone bright spot of the week is Justine Spann’s continued strong play, as 14 kills against Utah and 23 against OSU led the team.

Next up, the team travels to Arizona to take on the Sun Devils on Friday and the Wildcats on Sunday.

Golf

The men’s team finished seventh in New Mexico this week as they struggled to gain a footing, finishing at 17-over.

The team as a whole failed to get anything going in their road trip, as the best-scoring Buff was Daniel O’Loughlin at 4-over par with a tie for 25th. John Paterson was right behind him, tying for 30th at 5-over. Paterson entered the day in a tie for sixth but slipped down the standings.

Looking forward, the men will host the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational on Oct. 7th and 8th at the Colorado National Golf Club, while the women look to take care of business in the Molly Collegiate Invitational.

Cross Country

The Buffs’ cross country teams are now entering meet-week after a three-week break, with a trip to Indiana coming on Friday, October 4th at the Joe Paine Invitational at Notre Dame.
