BOULDER — Colorado is stocking up on gunslingers.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Maddox Kopp announced Monday that he will be joining the Colorado Buffaloes. Kopp, a Houston native, chose the University of Houston over offers from a dozen other schools, including Ole Miss and Colorado.

Kopp, a 6-foot-5 pro-style passer, was the No. 53 quarterback in the 2021 class, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He enrolled early at Houston but he didn’t play a snap in his lone season with the Cougars.
Now, Kopp joins a crowded quarterback room in Boulder. Colorado returns starter Brendon Lewis for his sophomore season, as well as his competitor for the job, junior J.T. Shrout, who tore his ACL just before the season began.
Plus, Drew Carter will return for his redshirt freshman season. He was ranked No. 66 in the composite, 13 spots below Kopp. He finished 40 spots ahead of Kopp in 247Sports’ own rankings.
Colorado also added true freshman Owen McCown, the son of longtime NFL quarterback Josh McCown, in the 2022 recruiting class. Another 2022 recruit, Oakie Salave’a, joined the team as an athlete but will start out at quarterback.
Colorado will enter the season with six scholarship quarterbacks, after only having two—Lewis and Carter—available during the 2021 season.
Let the competition begin.
