DENVER, Colo. — Bad news, Broncos fans.

Denver opted to hold Russell Wilson out of Sunday’s contest against the New York Jets, the Broncos announced, as he recovers from a hamstring injury that occurred during last week’s game against the Chargers. Brett Rypien, 26, will start in Wilson’s place on Sunday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Broncos will re-evaluate Wilson ahead of the Broncos’ game against the Jaguars in London next week.

Wilson played through the hamstring injury in the second half against the Chargers. He’s also played through a partially torn lat, which he sustained against the Raiders, for two-and-a-half games.

Wilson’s status was in doubt all week, as he split starting reps with Rypien during practices.

Rypien, a fourth-year quarterback who entered the league as an undrafted free agent, has one previous start in his career. In 2020, Rypien beat the Jets 37-28 on Thursday Night Football. He threw for 242 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. He has appeared in four games, completing 27 of 42 passes for 295 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.

Sunday’s game is scheduled to kick off at 2:25 p.m. at Empower Field in Denver.
