BOULDER — The Buffs added another tight end.
Regis Jesuit standout Andrew Metzger announced on Twitter Thursday that he has committed to the University of Colorado. The 6-foot-5 tight end hasn’t been rated by all of the recruiting services so he doesn’t have a composite rating, but 247Sports gave him an 85 rating, good for three stars. He is Colorado’s seventh commit in the 2023 class.

Metzger fits the traditional mold of tight end; he does the dirty work in the trenches. While Metzger hasn’t been much of a seam-stretcher, he’s still been productive in the passing game as an underneath threat who knows how to pick apart zones between the linebackers. He is also a productive defensive end for Regis.
Colorado’s tight ends room has been in flux for the past couple of years. In 2020, the Buffs converted players to the tight end so they’d have enough bodies in the room after a slew of injuries hit the position. That left Colorado with 12 tight ends on the roster for spring ball in 2021, a ridiculous number. Now, the Buffs have five tight ends, senior Brady Russell and five freshmen, and things seem to have stabilized.
Russell has been one of the better blocking tight ends in the Pac-12 over the past few seasons and the Buffs now have some receiving options behind him. With Russell set to move on next season, Metzger could be next up to fill his role. Regardless, Metzger will add more talent to what’s already one of the more exciting groups on the roster.
Metzger is Colorado’s seventh commitment in the 2023 recruiting class, joining running back AJ Newberry, tackle Naquil Betrand, edge Kam Bizor, receiver Edward Schultz, quarterback Ryan Staub and safety Adrian Wilson.
