Well, this is sophomoric. Which is appropriate, considering we’re talking about college sports.
According to Ryan Holmgren of the Casper Star Tribune, fans of the Wyoming Cowboys have petitioned the White House — who probably have bigger fish to fry — about renaming Colorado State’s Moby Arena after Josh Adams.
The petition reads: “With his performance on February 20, 2015 Josh Adams of Laramie, Wyoming clearly demonstrated his complete and permanent ownership of the premises in Fort Collins, CO known collectively as ‘Moby Arena,’ though by all rights it is really just a dumpy little gym.
With (37) points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and (4) steals, Adams clearly took ownership of the building and as such it should be renamed henceforth and forever after as the ‘Josh Adams Gym and Recreation Center.’”
Now, Wyoming fans have 30 days to obtain 100,000 signatures (are there that many people in Wyoming? Apparently they’re just north of half a million.) to receive an official response from the White House.
Construction on Moby Arena was completed in 1966, the first year Colorado State Rams men’s basketball started playing on Plum St. Recently, improvements including a new ticket office on the North side as well as the new Colorado State Hall of Fame on the South side concourse were added in 2013.
As for Adams, who scored 37 points in an unconscious effort, a spectacular shooting night which propelled Wyoming to the 84-66 win, will finish his college career 2-2 in Fort Collins with a five-game winning streak overall against the Rams. That doesn’t sound like he “owns the premises.” In four games at Moby Arena, Adams averaged 15.3 points, 4 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, including a 0 point, 1 rebound, 0 assist effort as a freshman.
Hey, it’s all fun and games for a fan base whose team is 13-16 on the season with little hope of achieving the postseason. Not that the Rams are in a much better place (15-13).
So, who can blame the fans, or Larry Syatt who danced and “dabbed” at the Colorado/Wyoming border, for celebrating?
But, this is Moby Arena we’re talking about. No way, no how it’s ever named for a Wyoming player. Five of the largest crowds in Moby history were against Wyoming, including a wild 11,323 fans in 1969. The current capacity of the aging arena is 8,745.
Could it be just a coincidence the school celebrated Moby’s 50th anniversary recently and now Wyoming fans are trying to rename it after Adams? Methinks not.
