RUNDOWN

In a game with more hype surrounding it than any other in the Mike Macintyre era, the Buffaloes fought tooth and nail.

After an odd beginning that started with an hour long rain delay and a Ralphie-less entrance the game segued nicely into three turnovers on the first four drives for the Buffs and Ducks combined, two of those belonging to Colorado.

Things began to get on the track to normalcy when Oregon’s Royce Freeman turned the Buffs last second turnover into six, when he scampered 29 yards to break the ice on the game and gave the Ducks a 7-0 lead.

The Buffs answered back just under eight minutes later when a Christian Powell and Phillip Lindsay powered drive ended in a two-yard plunge for Powell. And Colorado took their first lead of the game shortly there after when Sefo Liufau hit Shay Fields for in the back corner of the end zone. The Buffs were up 14-7 and Folsom was rocking.

The Buffs led again, at 17-14, but unfortunately for the black and gold… or silver and black faithful on this night, that would be their last lead of the game. Oregon tied the score at 17 before the half, and dominated the game after the break, outscoring the Buffs 24-7 and getting their first Pac-12 win of the season.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Royce Freeman: The Oregon workhorse carried the ball 27 times for 166 yards and two touchdowns, systematically breaking the Buffs defense down as the game went on.

While it may be a down year for the Ducks, players like Freeman showcase the difference in talent between Colorado and Oregon.

PLAY OF THE GAME

Nelson Spruce’s grab falling towards the sideline was probably the Buffs most explosive play of the day and was yet another classic showcase of the talent possessed by number 22.

The concentration, the execution, the awareness, a thing of beauty.

TURNING POINT OF THE GAME

With just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Buffaloes trailed 24-17 and were looking to manufacture a game-tying drive, and moving it nicely. Liufau dropped back to pass on first down, and was surrounded by pressure immediately, in his efforts to throw the ball away, it slipped out of his hands and ended up in those of Henry Mondeaux, a duck.

Oregon turned it into six, and the Buffs were never able to muster up enough momentum to get the deficit under seven.

1: Ahkello Witherspoon’s pick in the first quarter was his first career interception.

2: Diego Gonzalez became one of just two Colorado kickers since 2007 to have two 50+ yard field goals in one season.

LASTING IMPACT

The Buffs drop to 0-1 in the conference and 3-2 on the season. The narrative remains that they are improving but have yet to get over the hump to the point where they can make the necessary plays to beat teams like Oregon.

Colorado travels to the desert, Tempe, Arizona to take on the Sun Devils of Arizona State who, while have underachieved thus far this season, got a massive win over UCLA on Saturday night.
