ENGLEWOOD, Co. — Von Miller loves the kids.
Just make the trip out to one of Von’s football camps and you’ll see the multi-million-dollar superstar chopping it up and laughing along with hundreds of young ones, making their day and illuminating just why he is the perfect face of the franchise in Denver.
And Friday morning was no different at Miller’s 2019 camp, as he cruised around on his golf cart, turning the heads of little ones who have looked up to him for years, stopping to pose for selfies or a quick dance-off.
But, with the theme of kids on the mind, it was his comments on some slightly older kids during a quick meeting with the media that raised eyebrows.
Asked which rookies have impressed him the most up to this point, the former Super Bowl MVP got his words off with a quickness that would give Mike Remmers flashbacks.
“Noah Fant,” he said instantly. “Noah Fant has looked pretty good and Drew Lock has looked pretty good, too. I told the guys earlier, I said, ‘Man, they’re calling you by your first and last name, they only do the greats like that.'”
Fant and Lock would be the only two names that Von uttered, not even throwing in an “all the guys look good” quote just to toe the “coach speak” line, per se.
So what is it about those two?
“You got Noah Fant and Drew Lock in there, you can see the talent from those guys,” Miller explained. “Those are the guys that have impressed me just right off the top and they haven’t even done anything yet. It’s just by watching [Noah] do little routes or Drew throw the deep ball a little, scramble around and throw the little dink-and-dunk pass. You can see the talent.”
When it comes to straight-up, eye-test talent, this should not necessarily come as a surprise. Obviously, Fant—the Broncos’ first-rounder—has unlimited potential, and Lock was considered a first-round prospect by many, with his arm talent being his strongest attribute.
The hype around both players is already very real, but to hear it from Miller without even a trace of hesitation should be comforting.
“You can see why they’re going to be real good for us,” Miller concluded, singing a song directly into the ears of Broncos Country.
If he’s right on that, especially as it relates to Lock, things are about to get quite fun in Denver.
