Why Von Miller wants Justin Houston to get three sacks on Sunday

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Who whines about free wine? The Kansas City Chiefs, apparently.

Yes, not long after news came out that Von was sending the complimentary wine—crafted by Boulder’s own Jesse Katz, a graduate of Fairview High School—several Chiefs complained they had not yet received their bottle.

On Thursday, the wine finally made it into the Kansas City locker room, and Miller gave an explanation of what took so long.

“I texted Justin [Houston], and he said that he was giving it out. I just put it in the captain’s hands,” he said with a laugh. “Justin is the captain over there so whatever decision he makes with it, it’ll be cool, but I did my part in Kansas City (laughs) they have it… I can’t go to the facility and pass it out myself, so it’s all on Justin Houston.”

Even though the Broncos star sent the wine long ago, some of the Chiefs were a little suspicious of the gift finding its way into their possession the week they played Von and his Denver teammates.

“I’m not drinking it until after the game,” said Kansas City defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches. “I don’t know what’s in it. It might slow down my mojo.”

Von was adamant, though, that he is not trying to slow down anybody in KC. In fact, he went much further than that, explaining why he hopes fellow AFC West sack ace Justin Houston plays great.

“No, I hope not,” the five-time Pro Bowler said of if he hopes the wine will slow down Houston. “We have our best games when Justin gets a sack then I get a sack, or I get a sack then Justin gets a sack and we kind of go back and fourth. Those type of games, those Chiefs-Broncos games where we’re both having great games are incredible. I like to see success from Justin; he’s one of my favorite pass rushers in the National Football League, and we’ve been through some similar-type stuff with ACLs.

“I think I’m just drawn naturally to Justin and the guy that he is,” Miller added. “I wouldn’t want him to be any different; I want him to be dominant. I want him to get three sacks so I can go out there and get three sacks too.”

On Thursday, Wade Phillips explained that his defense doesn’t pay attention to the offense, they just try to out-perform the other team’s defense. No. 58’s attitude—apparently—mirrors that perfectly. Just don’t tell Trevor Siemian about Von’s Christmas wish.
