Why Drew Lock has seen a "big flip of a switch" from Jerry Jeudy this week

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — After another 16-point output on Sunday where the Broncos’ offense failed to find the end zone through the air, Vic Fangio called out Denver’s entire passing offense.

“I think as a team we just need to fix our entire passing game,” Vic Fangio said on Monday. “We just haven’t thrown it very efficiently the last two weeks. That’s an 11-man operation, that’s us as coaches—we’re all in it together and we have to go to work on that. It has to improve, no doubt about it.”

Jerry Jeudy heard the head coach’s message loud and clear.

“I’ve seen a big flip of a switch from him—talking in the huddle, being vocal, told the huddle to tighten up today, which was, you know, as a wide receiver as a rookie, not necessarily his responsibility to make sure the huddle is tight, it’s definitely mine and the oline’s, but he went in there and he got vocal,” Drew Lock revealed after Wednesday’s practice. “I thought that was awesome.”

Despite being a first-round pick from the University of Alabama, Jeudy doesn’t boast a huge personality that could very well come with a player with his accolades. Instead of having a boisterous personality, as many NFL receivers have, the 6-foot-1, 193-pound receiver is actually quite soft-spoken.

But not anymore. Not after Fangio called out the passing game. Not after another below-average game for the Broncos’ offense. And not after he talked with Lock after the game.

“I look back on my last games as a rookie and I hated the fact that I wasn’t as vocal as I could have been and used the rookie [label] and let the vets kind of talk as an excuse,” Lock said, explaining the conversation he had with Jeudy after Sunday’s 43-16 loss to the Chiefs. “I told him, ‘I don’t want you to feel that, especially right now as we’re kind of in a hole. Guys will look to you. Guys will look to me regardless of how old we are. And we got to keep that vocal point going.'”

It took less than one practice for the 21-year old to find his voice. And Jeudy flipping the switch isn’t just vocal, either.

“There will be no excuses for us during practice if we don’t complete a pass to each other,” Lock stated. “If we do incomplete a pass, we’re going to run it two times after practice. We incompleted a pass today and I think he wanted to run it five more times after practice.”

Through six games of his NFL career, the first-round pick has 19 receptions on 37 targets for 286 yards and one touchdown. He also has a few drops on the season, including two in Week 1 and a dropped touchdown against the New England Patriots in Week 6.

“I thought he had a good day today,” Fangio said on Wednesday, as he confirmed he’s seen Jeudy flip a switch this week. “It’s all part of the process of learning how to play in the NFL, you’re at the highest level. I thought he had a good day today.”

Drew Lock doesn’t want Jerry Jeudy to stay quiet as a rookie. And he’s not.
