Knowing they needed one more win to become bowl eligible, Colorado State came out on fire Saturday afternoon.
The Rams senior safety Trent Matthews picked off New Mexico Lobos quarterback Lamar Jordan on the home team’s second play from scrimmage. The ball was woefully under-thrown and Matthews sold out to dive and grab it from the air.
On the very next play, Colorado State went for it all and scored with Deionte Gaines’ speed. The Rams went out with a two tight end set, and while nearly every player went left, right guard Fred Zerblis pulled to the right and Gaines caught the toss and went to the house.
This touchdown put the Rams up 7-0 early in Albuquerque and both plays set the tone of the game.
