For the first time in recent weeks the Broncos came out on the good side of halftime adjustments. After trailing 17-3 at halftime, Denver’s defense held the Bengals to just 90 yards in the second half in the Broncos 20-17 overtime win.
“We knew that we hadn’t even started yet, so we knew the second half was going to be our half,” Broncos linebacker Von Miller said postgame. “We didn’t have a lot of corrections when we came in at halftime. We just talked about some of the stuff they were doing.”
The Broncos only sacked Bengals quarterback A.J. McCarron twice on Monday night but found ways to shift the momentum back in their favor late in the game. “I think the changes that we made at halftime were different and then the heart of the guys,” DeMarcus Ware said. “The guys really wanted to get out there and win. This was a big game for us. You can see how they really came out, played and made some big plays. It just felt great.”
Although he didn’t appear much in the stat sheet only recording 2 tackles on the night, Ware might’ve made the single biggest single defensive play when he jumped on a bad Bengals snap to McCarron in overtime to seal the victory for Denver. “Oh yeah, I knew that I had the ball,” Ware said. “When I saw that on the ground, I was so close to it and I was like, ‘There is no way that somebody is going to take this ball from me. It felt good to finish the game that way. We thought that we were going to finish it with that field goal.”
The Broncos will try to clinch at least the second seed and a first round bye in the AFC when they host the Chargers next Sunday in their regular season finale.
