Scottsdale, Ariz — Spring trainings presents all kinds of interesting and, quite frankly, pretty awesome opportunities for just about everyone involved, from the most experienced of veterans to the freshest of faces maybe in the United States for the very first time, everyone gathers to play and celebrate the game of baseball.
For the Top 2 prospects in the Colorado Rockies system, this meant a rare opportunity to test their skills … against each other. With plenty of scouts and pretty much the entire front office watching, the last two first-round picks for the Rockies, pitcher Riley Pint and shortstop Brendan Rodgers, faced off in an epic duel on the backfields at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. And it was pretty spectacular.
Pint has been clocked up to 102 mph on the fastball, which BSN Denver has witnessed live, and touched (at least) 99 during this simulated game.
Rodgers has one of the quickest power swings of anyone in minor league baseball, which landed him all the way up at No. 11 on Baseball Prospectus’ list of all prospects.
First, Pint had to get himself warmed up, doing this to the hitter before Rodgers:

Then it was time for the big matchup. Rodgers tried to ambush the first pitch and lined a screamer down the third base line, but foul. Somehow, he was in front of the prodigious fastball. But after a few more foul balls and a couple of good takes, Pint gained the upper hand, eventually putting the Rockies top prospect away with the high heat:
