Spring is in the air. And so is…football!
Colorado State Rams football kicked off their annual session of spring practices on Friday afternoon inside the Indoor Practice Facility on campus.
Of course, as with most seasons, the intrigue lies within the position battles. And, specifically this season, it’s at quarterback first, and the others second.
There’s Nick Stevens, the soon-to-be redshirt junior who played in all 13 games for Colorado State in 2015, leading the Mountain West in touchdowns tossed (21) and came in second in yards thrown (2,679).
Then, there’s also Faton Bauta, a graduate student who transferred from the University of Georgia to play for his old coach Mike Bobo. Bobo, of course, came to Colorado State in December of 2014, becoming the first Colorado State head coach to win seven games in his first season in charge.
Now, the two are reunited in Fort Collins, and for Ram fans, it may feel so good.
But, when the team’s inaugural spring football depth chart was released on Tuesday, Stevens was No. 1 and Bauta was No. 2, with J.C. Robles No. 3 and freshman Collin Hill No. 4.
Well, Bauta’s not worried about the depth chart:

Bauta’s incredibly confident in himself — which is a great characteristic of a quarterback — and he could win the starting job. Only time will tell.
But, what did Bobo think of his quarterbacks on the first practice during the spring?
Of course, it’s only the first day of spring practice. Guys are going to be a bit rusty and, as Bobo said, the defense will cheat knowing the offense has a very limited selection of plays to go with. As the practices continue, we’ll get a better grasp of who gives Colorado State their best chance of winning on Saturdays.
One thing’s for sure, Bobo loves the way Bauta prepares and studies the game of football.
