BOULDER — The No. 25 Colorado Buffaloes bounced back in a major way on Sunday night, dominating the Utah Utes in every facet of the game.
After a heartbreaking defeat last week in which the Buffs’ were outscored 24-5 in the final minutes to Oregon State, Colorado roared to an early lead that included a 14-point run. Their early success dictated the pace throughout the game, as Utah was dominated on both ends of the floor.
The Buffaloes showed great strength in overcoming their shortcomings last week, playing one of their most complete games of the season against a relatively strong Utah squad.
Here’s what went down earlier tonight:
Colorado suffocated Utah with physicality
It was clear from the beginning that Evan Battey was too much for the Utes’ big men. While notching the third double-double of his career, Battey cleaned up the glass with 10 rebounds, including seven on the offensive side. His presence was felt early and often as he continued to clean up Colorado possessions with his strong play in the post, earning him 17 points on 72.7% shooting (8-11).
Tyler Bey also showed toughness while earning his seventh double-double of the season, grabbing 12 rebounds to go along with 11 points. Bey also grabbed two steals and a thunderous block that led to a fast-break score, just one of several instances of Colorado winning with speed in transition.
Colorado held Utah to just 35% shooting from the floor while snagging 18 more rebounds. In the 39-point victory, much of the Buffs’ lineup saw action and played as one cohesive unit, giving fans a reason to be hopeful once again.
McKinley Wright’s incredible stretch continues
After winning Pac-12 Player of the Week for his effort against the Oregon schools last week, McKinley Wright continued that momentum into another great game.
While only missing one shot, Wright dropped in 16 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists while having a perfect 3-3 night from behind the arc. He also earned two steals while not losing the ball once on the night.
No. 25 continues to be the catalyst controlling the game, and his turnover-free night should bring a smile to fans.
One of the biggest problems facing Colorado in non-conference play was their inability to control the basketball, playing carelessly and giving opposing teams too many extra possessions.
Following the Dayton victory, Wright is averaging just under two turnovers a game while the team is 3-1, including the huge victory over then-No. 4 Oregon. He continues to improve as the season progresses, and plays his best when the team needs him to. While Utah was a big game at home, their upcoming road trip will provide yet another test for the Buffs.
Looking ahead
Colorado will now travel to Tempe, AZ to take on Arizona State on Thursday evening. The Buffaloes took down the Sun Devils back on Nov. 8 during their trip to China, and will now look to use that experience to take another victory away from home.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
