While the Colorado State Rams football team awaits their bowl destination, with one game left to play for the seniors, for one special Ram, his college career is already over.

Trent Matthews, senior leader at the safety position, has a torn ACL and his career at Colorado State is now over.

Matthews finished the season with 78 total tackles and two interceptions on the season. He’s been one of the Rams hardest hitters and a leader for the defense for the last two seasons. As a junior, Matthews was named a team captain for the season and as a sophomore he led the team with four interceptions.

His 15 tackles were a game and career-high in the win over Air Force, who plays for the Mountain West Championship tomorrow against San Diego State. The safety came up huge for CSU when he picked off New Mexico Lobos quarterback Lamar Jordon when he picked off the ball on the Lobos’ second play from scrimmage. That play led to a Deionte Gaines touchdown on the next play and set the tone for a big-time Rams road win only two weeks ago.

He was also named a member of the AFCA Allstate Good Works team in September; one of 11 NCAA players named to the team which is the most prestigious off-the-field honor in college football.

The injury is sad for Matthews, who is one of the best people on the Rams 2015 football team, as he’s proven with his off-the-field work as a football coach with youth.

So, the Rams will be without Matthews for their bowl game — wherever the destination ends up being — meaning Nick Januska will likely start opposite of Kevin Pierre-Louis.
