Denver Broncos training camp is almost in full swing; the team will finally put full pads on tomorrow but today they had shoulder pads and helmets on, and the intensity turned up a notch undoubtedly.

Coaches expected hustle turned all the way up and were not tolerating anything less. The team was flying around, the music was cracked up, the crowd was involved, all in all, a great Saturday morning for some football at the UC Health Training Center.

BSN Denver was on hand for the entirety of the two and a half hour practice, here’s what we saw:

Back in action

Due to injuries and lack of participation in the Spring, the Broncos have been bringing Adam Gotsis, Russell Okung and Von Miller slowly. On Saturday morning, the team had a lengthy 11-on-11 and 7-0n-7 live period, and all three were participating in the full speed drills.

“Adam, Russell and Von all went about an hour and ten minutes today, so they’re pretty close, so about midway through next week they’ll be back doing everything. I think [Gotsis] has a way to go conditioning and football wise, but the progress has been good. I think we just have to keep going.”

Another guy who is back and action after injury is Gotsis’ fellow rookie, Devontae Booker. He has been fully cleared and is participating in all of practice.

“Very talented. You can see his football conditioning is not quite where C.J.’s is. He wears down a little bit in practice, but that’s understandable. He has a lot on his plate, a lot of football on his plate. He’s trying to go out there and compete, but I think he’s doing a good job.

As for a couple of injuries sustained yesterday, nothing but good news. Both Phil Taylor (knee) and Sylvester Williams (shoulder) had MRIs yesterday, and both came back showing no serious damage.

“We thought Phil might even be back today,” Kubiak said. “You could possibly see Phil tomorrow, Sly might be another day, but they’re both fine.”

Quarterbacks fail to impress

In front of a solid Saturday morning crowd, the Broncos ran an entertaining practice today with the bulk of the work at full speed in 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 situations. The only problem—the quarterbacks were highly underwhelming.

Paxton Lynch had the worst day of the three, making it more and more obvious that he is not necessarily a part of this quarterback competition, the rookie is seeming to have a hard time with the speed of the game and everything that is coming at him right now.

As for Sanchez and Siemian, who looked to split the first-team reps right down the middle on Saturday, neither were bad but they were also far from good. On a day when it appeared one of the emphasis was the long-ball out of play action, neither completed any of their deep throws. For the most par, the only balls that were on target were in the 5-15 yard range.

This Broncos offense is going to run the ball a whole bunch and other teams will be expecting it, throwing eight bodies in the box, there will be ample opportunity to get single coverage deep down the field with Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas. Whoever the starting quarterback of this team ends up being, they are going to need to find a way to hit that ball once or twice a game.

Caught in a Webster

The Broncos have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to talent in the secondary. Chris Harris Jr., Aqib Talib, T.J. Ward, Bradley Roby, Darian Stewart, it’s a big part of the reason they boasted the NFL’s best defense last season and a big part of the reason all of those players have a ring on their finger.

What if I told you that secondary might be getting even better? Rookie safety Justin Simmons has been receiving rave reviews since the start of OTAs, but on Saturday, it was a different third-round pick who displayed he might be ready to help the defense.

Kayvon Webster, heading into his fourth year, found himself matched up with Emmanuel Sanders multiple times today and every time he was challenged, he proved to be up to the task. Webster broke up two passes that were intended for Sanders and blanketed him on a deep route that was overthrown.

Webster has already proven his worth on special teams, making multiple huge plays throughout the playoff run and it may be finally coming together for him in coverage as well. With Aqib Talib potentially facing discipline from the league, Webster could be needed on the field this season, and he’s showing signs that he can hang with his All-Pro comrades.

Notes

  • With Taylor and Williams both out today, Vance Walker was working at nose tackle for the first team between Derek Wolfe and Jared Crick.
  • During his live reps, Adam Gotsis was working at left defensive end.
  • During the first live punting reps of camp, Britton Colquitt outperformed rookie Riley Dixon fairly convincingly.
  • Bennie Fowler had a nice day of camp, working in various receiver slots.
  • Mose Frazier had the highlight of, a full extension diving catch going across the middle.
  • In the first live, 11-on-11 work of the day, the offensive line from right to left was Stephenson, Sambrailo, Paradis, Garcia, Okung. Expect that to be the group heading into the season.
