Things are "clicking" for Trevor Siemian as he heads into preseason start

With the 2017 NFL preseason kicking off for the Denver Broncos tonight against the Chicago Bears, Denver has given the nod of starting quarterback to a familiar face.

Head coach Vance Joseph named last year’s quarterback, Trevor Siemian, the starter in Denver’s preseason opener ahead of former first-round draft pick, Paxton Lynch. By most—if not all—acounts, Siemian ahs outplayed Lynch thus far in camp, turning it on after a slow start to camp.

“Probably a week or so [ago] I just kind of felt a little more comfortable and things were clicking for me,” the third-year QB explained. “I got a big picture thought of how we were trying to attack scheme and defenses. I’ve just felt comfortable probably that last week getting going and also getting a feel for all of the guys. First or second group, it doesn’t matter. It’s just getting the feel for how guys run and what they do well. I think we’re all in a good spot right now.”

With No. 13 knowing about the start, he is able to be more prepared which, in this league, is paramount; being focused is his priority. But, as opposed to a regular season game, Siemian’s focus on Thursday night will be a bit different.

“I think preseason—especially these first couple of games—you’re focused on yourself and kind of what you do well and your scheme. There’s a little bit of game plan, but it’s not like a normal game week yet. We’re focused on what we do well. A little game plan stuff again, but it’s more about us.”

While Siemian will be the starter tonight against the Bears, “VJ” has already named Lynch the starter for next week’s showdown against San Francisco. From the outside, at least, that appears to put more pressure on the incumbent starter to stand out.

“It doesn’t affect how I do things really,” Siemian said. “I don’t know how the practices will go, but it’ll be good to practice against San Fran’s defense. I think Paxton and I are in the same spot with trying to make the most of the reps we get. It doesn’t matter the group.”

This test will be a good start for both Lynch and Siemian alike and while the latter will get the nod as starter, expect both players to see extended playing time and Joseph evaluates their play. Although this could count as pressure for both players, Siemian seems to be handling it well, which is a good sign.

“Shoot, they haven’t fired me yet,” he said with a grin. “That’s how I think of it. I’m alright.”
