The Colorado Rockies have signed their closer

The Colorado Rockies have finally solidified their closer position with the signing of Wade Davis, the former Kansas City Royal and Chicago Cub, according to multiple reports. This is another in a long line of moves by Jeff Bridich to create the best bullpen in franchise history and try to limit the amount of late-game chaos that can befall teams at any ballpark but especially at Coors Field.

The deal is reportedly for three years and $52 million.

Davis (32) has recorded 79 saves in his career, mostly coming over the last three seasons including 32 last year. He boasted an eye-popping 12.12 K/9 rate last year but walked over four batters per nine, both career highs. His 1.87 and 2.30 ERA marks over the last two years are also impressive. While he doesn’t quite have the resume that his former Kansas City teammate Greg Holland has, he doesn’t have the same wear and tear on his arm and he finished 2017 on a much stronger note.

It’s unclear at this time why Colorado soured on Holland, or at least came to prefer Davis. Though it should be said at this point that the Rockies are, despite all of this, not necessarily done making moves in the bullpen. Bridich has made it clear since he took over his current role he believes he can grow starters and position players and that the  ‘pen is the place to spend on vets.

Suddenly, a team that has been stuck with a narrative about how cheap they can be, especially in the pitching department, has one of the most expensive bullpens in MLB history at a combined $50M for the year.
