ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Nearly exactly one year after suffering a season-ending injury, it’s believed Tim Patrick suffered yet another season-ending injury during Monday’s practice.
According to Adam Schefter, it is believed Patrick tore his left achilles during the Broncos’ fifth practice of training camp on Monday.
The injury happened during 7-on-7s as Patrick was turning up the field and appeared to slip.
“I’ll tell you what happened,” Sean Payton said after practiced, detailing the injury. “I was watching it directly because he was running a route and it was something we had corrected earlier. It was kind of on air. He planted. I thought it looked like he slipped, but we’re evaluating his left achilles. That’s what we think the injury is. We haven’t confirmed it until he gets the MRI. But it wasn’t any contact, it was just coming out of a cut. His injury last year was to his right knee, so I think the natural question right away was, ‘Is it the same leg.’ But we’ll wait ’till we get an MRI.”
Immediately after falling to the ground, Patrick took off his helmet and threw it across the field, quickly followed by his gloves as he was visibly upset. Courtland Sutton and Russell Wilson quickly came to his side and stayed with him until he was carted off the field.
“It’s always difficult, especially a guy like that who is a leader, who is coming off pretty much an entire year of rehabilitation,” Payton added. “So it’s difficult for his teammates, for all of us.”
After practice, Josey Jewell and Patrick Surtain spoke highly of Patrick and how devastating it is to see him go down a second-straight training camp.
“I think especially with a player like him that’s a veteran, who is so respected. When I got hired here, he was one of the guys that I saw everyday because he was rehabbing last year’s injury,” Payton said. “That’s what makes it more difficult.”
Just hours after Patrick’s injury, K.J. Hamler announced on instagram he was diagnosed with pericarditis, a mild heart irritation. Hamler added he was feeling chest pains while working out before camp. The former second-round draft pick said he’s taking a “quick break to get this all taken care of.”
According to Mike Garafolo, the Broncos plan to waive Hamler with a non-football illness designation. However, the team has an “eye toward brining him back” with the expectation he will miss weeks, not months.
The Broncos have 11 other receivers on the roster, but the expectation is they will look to add to the room. Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton and rookie second-round pick Marvin Mims highlight the remaining receivers.
