The 5 worst drafts in Colorado Rockies History

The MLB first-year player (Rule 4) draft is Thursday and the Colorado Rockies have the fourth overall pick. Last year with the third overall pick the club chose shortstop Brendan Rodgers. With the selections yet to be made this season, now is a good time to look back on the five worst draft years the franchise has had.

5: 2006

Everyone remembers the gigantic bust that was Greg Reynolds, the Rockies first round pick in 2006. The right-handed pitcher was drafted just ahead of Clayton Kershaw, Evan Longoria, Brandon Morrow, Andrew Miller, Tim Lincecum, and Max Scherzer, but Reynolds’ classmates for the Rockies didn’t do much either. The second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth round picks didn’t make the majors and the class has only totaled 899 games played in the bigs. 184 of these games came from the unsigned 18th round pick Andrew Cashner and so has 4.3 of the 10.3 WAR garnered from those 2006 picks. Other players to make the big leagues were Will Harris, Micheal McKenry, Justin Miler, Sean Halton, and Scott Maine.

4: 2008

With their second-round pick the Rockies took Charlie Blackmon, that’d be the only positive in this draft but it’s pretty nice positive. The club took Christian Friedrich in the first-round, whom they have recently cut ties to.  Those two would be only ones to make the majors with the Rockies out of the entire fifty player draft. Andy Burns, Chris Dominguez and Thomas Field were also taken by the franchise but none signed.

3: 2001

Most people don’t realize that when the Rockies signed Mike Hampton they lost their spot in the first-round, meaning the club had the last pick overall in the first-round at 44. With that pick Colorado chose Jayson Nix, he had a solid seven year career with eight teams. The club took notable contributor Cory Sullivan in the seventh round. Only three other players taken in the 50 round draft would make the big leagues, Matt Palmer, Eric Patterson and Chris Gimenez, the later two of which went unsigned. Overall the team would only get 377 games played from the 2001 class, obtaining a total of 4.7 WAR.

2: 2007

Although Rockies first-round pick in 2007 Casey Weathers was the only player taken in the top ten to never reach the majors, there were some notable busts taken just before the right-hander. Josh Vitters, Matt LaPorta and Ross Detwiler all failed to make positive impacts in the big leagues which makes the fact that each the Cubs, Brewers, Nationals and Rockies passed on Madison Bumgarner, Jason Heyward, Todd Frazier and Josh Donaldson hurt even more.

Colorado didn’t have a player until their ninth round selection, Jordan Pacheco reach the majors, and throughout his career he has been a negative four WAR player. The Rockies also selected major leaguers Matt Reynolds, Chris Sale, Bruce Billings and Logan Schafer. Sale, who went unsigned made up for most of the WAR which would otherwise be at a lowly -0.9 without him.

1: 1994

One of the most tragic moments in franchise was when 1994 first-round pick Doug Million died while having a serve asthma attack. The 21-year-old left-hander had made it to Double-A in 1997 season and was ranked as the 19th best prospect in baseball.

In total the Rockies only got seven games out of the class of 1994, and the class would total -2.9 WAR over their big league careers. Luther Hackman and Mike Saipe were the only players to appear in a Colorado Rockies uniform.
