You may have heard by now that the Colorado Rockies have extended Nolan Arenado for at least the next three years, most likely the next eight.
Tuesday will forever be a landmark day in the history of the franchise and its fandom, one few who follow the club could ever forget.
But it wasn’t just Rockies Twitter that went crazy. Arenado’s teammates were as excited as anyone to hear the news.
Here is what a few of them had to say:
Jon Gray: “It’s great. People here love him. We love him as a teammate. I never seen anyone work as hard as he does. I have all the trust in the world in him….”
David Dahl: “It’s very exciting. He deserves all of it. He works hard. He’s worked his butt off for it. As an organization, we’re very excited. I’m personally very excited to have him here for the next eight years. It’s going to be a good time. We’re going to try to win some championships.
Chris Iannetta: “It’s awesome. It’s great for the fans. It’s great for baseball. Nolan’s one of the best players in the game. He went out there and competed at a high level and he’s getting compensated for that. He’s one of the best hitters in the game. He’s an integral part to our team. He’s great for the fans, great for us that he’s around for a long time.”
Charlie Blackmon: “Oh, I’m very excited. Any time you can lock up one of the top players in the game, for an extended period of time, you have to be excited for the organization. I’m personally excited to be playing with him. He’s my buddy. I’m glad he’s sticking around and I’m excited what that means to the organization. We’ve really committed to winning….”
The following few days may find that there is indeed a group of people who aren’t thrilled to see the Rockies give out this contract, but so far the reactions are about as universally positive as you are likely to find on something like this.
The last comment from Blackmon seems to be the most salient point provided, a recognition that for whatever else this deal may mean for Arenado and for baseball, it makes it abundantly clear that the Rockies are committed to winning for the forseeable future.
