The Colorado Rockies had a Big Bang moment that helped them form into a real baseball franchise and it wasn’t Opening Day 1993. No, that pivotal moment that created the Rockies universe happened with the 1992 Expansion Draft. Held at the Marriott Marquis in the New York City on November 17, 1992, two groups of baseball professionals gathered to make lemonade from the lemons available to them by the other MLB clubs. Colorado and the Florida Marlins aimed to put together the best team possible and avoid losing 100 games in the process. (Both would succeed at this ultimate goal.) The other 26 teams could protect 15 players on their 40-man roster. After each round, consisting of 26 picks, National…

There’s a sizable opportunity for the Colorado Rockies over the next three days. A trio of contests against the 61-82 Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field could help the 2022 squad from being on the wrong side of history. The 108-year-old ballpark nestled in a neighborhood on the Northside seems quaint, but it’s not the type of location that produces home runs. Wrigley Field has a home run factor of 98 since 2020, according to Baseball Savant. This means it allows less home runs than average, and is 16th overall among MLB’s 30 cathedrals.  Since the Rockies’s schedule takes them to San Francisco and Los Angeles to close out their season, now is the time to make up some ground and…

Pull the plug. The 2021 Home Run Derby at Coors Field will not be using a humidor to store baseballs. And that might right a wrong as far as it concerns a certain Colorado Rockies’ slugger. When Trevor Story went down to one knee to swat the first of three home runs on September 5, 2018, it was recognized at...

On Opening Day 2016, Colorado traveled to Arizona to pit their shiny new toys against one another. During the offseason, Zack Greinke opted out of a three-year, $71M pact ($23.7M average annual salary) with the Los Angeles Dodgers only to stick around in the NL West and sign with the Diamondbacks on a six-year, $206.5M pact ($34.4M average annual salary). For the Rockies, their new toy came from drastically different circumstances. After trading Troy Tulowitzki during the 2015 season, José Reyes became the de facto starting shortstop with two-years and approximately $50M remaining on his deal. That offseason, Reyes was involved in a violation of MLB’s domestic abuse policy and suspended for the first 51 games of the 2016 season.…

A rudimentary internet search reveals the first game played at Coors Field took place April 26, 1995. Dante Bichette stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 14th inning and launched a three-run walk-off homer into the night to christen the new stadium in the grandest way possible. However, that’s not entirely accurate. Before the delayed start of the 1995 season cause by an ugly work stoppage between players and owners, all 30 MLB clubs decided to move forward with replacement players on January 13 and play an abbreviated 144 game schedule to accommodate the less-than-stellar stand-ins. After a most unusual Spring Training – excluding that of 2020 – an exhibition game between the new Colorado Rockies and even…
