SAN DIEGO – Providing the kind of warmth in the winter that’s typical for the aptly-named Hot Stove League is what makes the Winter Meetings one of the most exciting times of the baseball season. Between $300 million deals and players changing employment from one coast to the other, as with Xander Bogaerts’ Boston-to-San Diego trek or Trea Turner’s Los…

When the Colorado Rockies hosted the 2021 All-Star Game in club history, it was the second in club history and first in 23 years. Running out to center field at Coors Field in the top of the first and batting eighth for the National League was Bryan Reynolds of the Pittsburgh Pirates. There’s a chance that scene could be revisited 81 times next year. Following failed negotiations on a contract extension between the club and player, Reynolds requested to be traded out of Pittsburgh. A spokesman with the team issued a statement that his request will be denied and that the 27-year-old will be a contributing member of the 2023 Pirates. Well, how else should they respond when their leverage…

The 2019 season in Minor League Baseball marked an end to a simpler time in the world of affiliated baseball. There were 160 teams in 15 different leagues in various cities across the United States and Canada. (Vancouver is the only one north of the U.S. border.) A global pandemic wiped out all semblance of normalcy to everything and the entire slate of games for the 2020 MiLB season was canceled. When the traditions of baseball returned in 2021, a few major details had changed: four entire leagues were removed as affiliates as well 43 different minor league teams that lost the summertime celebration to the community they served. Due to the reorganization of MiLB, the Colorado Rockies were without…

Jackie Robinson won the first Rookie of the Year Award in 1947. Forty years later, it was renamed to honor the Civil Rights trailblazer. While Colorado may have developed many talented All-Stars during their time, starting pitcher Jason Jennings is the only Rockie to ever earn the NL Rookie of the Year Award. Jason Jennings Award for Rookie of the Year There was zero shortage of rookies this season as 10 different prospects made their Major League debut with Colorado in 2022. Yet a rookie who debuted in 2021 was the one who proved most valuable to the club throughout the season. This approach of giving big league experience was precisely what fans witnessed during the final weeks with promotions…

For every fan who sat through all 162 games this season for the Colorado Rockies, you should be saluted. Despite witnessing the fifth-worst season in franchise history (68-94, .420), there were moments that made an indelible mark on all our memories, even if you experienced it the morning after. That, ultimately, is the reward for committing to a team: memories that leave a mark in our minds and make an impact on our hearts. The Heartstrings There are no any shortages of heartfelt moments in our National Pastime. The start to the 2022 season captured hearts in Denver in an unexpected way.  There was the first full-capacity Opening Day in three years – with the city’s own Kyle Freeland given…

When we look back on the Colorado Rockies’ 2022 season in a decade, what will be remembered most? Is there a chance we may not recall much of anything from the slate of 162 games we just witnessed? Any time a team fails to win the World Series – there are always 29 teams in this situation in a given year – there will always be room to contextualize what was askew in addition to what went properly or even better than expected. We can learn a lot about 2022 by reflecting upon the 2012 Rockies. That squad from a decade ago lost a club-record 98 games. They were three years removed from their last postseason appearance (2009) and would…

Colorado finishes 43.0 games behind Los Angeles and in last place in the NL West. Tuesday and Wednesday at Dodger Stadium actually delivered some intriguing performances despite the lack of relevance. Which rookie homered off a future Hall of Famer? And just like that, it’s all over. With a 6-1 loss to the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon, the Colorado Rockies finished their 2022 season with a 68-94 record (.420) and with sole possession of last place in the National League West. The first official offseason for Bill Schmidt as general manager brought about some big investments. Schmidt signed five free agents, swung a trade for a big league outfielder and locked up four Rockies to multi-year extensions before Opening Day. Extensions for Kyle Freeland and Daniel Bard during the season raised the total amount of new guaranteed money to $428 million following the end of the 2021 season. Despite the financial expenditure for a roster that appeared…

At 6’5” and 226 lbs, Michael Toglia was built to hit baseball a long, long way. Toglia launched three home runs with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes on August 27. That gave him 30 for 2022, third-most this season among Colorado Rockies minor leaguers. After only 97 games at Double-A earlier in the year, Toglia set the Hartford Yard Goats single-season record with 23 home runs. (Brenton Doyle later tied this mark.) As much as this appeared to indicate he was ready for the big leagues, the UCLA product could have made his MLB debut much earlier. And not because of his bat. “I think his time in Denver is going to be soon,” Todd Helton said of Toglia to Danielle…

Drew Goodman, voice of the Colorado Rockies for AT&T SportsNet, shares his thoughts on the final week of the season. Which players – and why – should we monitor? Who won’t be on the field in Los Angeles? And what moves do the Rockies need to make for 2023? Colorado Rockies GM Bill Schmidt addressed the media on Saturday in the same dugout occupied by several of the prized prospects touted as the reason for optimism. Opening with remarks that thanked the fans for supporting his team, Schmidt highlighted the future of the franchise in the form of their farm system. “Needless to say, the season hasn’t met our expectations, but at the same point a lot of good things went on that don’t show up here every day,” before adding, “And I say that in terms of our minor leagues and some of the foundational pieces that we’re going to need going forward.” Schmidt spent significant amounts of the 14 minutes discussing the youth of the organization. The hype is more than just hope with the arrival of Colorado Rockies’ top infield prospect Ezequiel Tovar. Batting eighth and playing shortstop on Friday against the San Diego Padres as one of fives rookies in the starting lineup, Tovar represents the start of something promising for an organization heading into it’s fourth consecutive offseason without September relevance. At least that’s what everyone at 20th and Blake expects: promise. It’s the same exuberance for the fans inside Coors Field and anyone around the world wearing a cap with the interlocking C-R. Tovar delivered in his first game, knocking a single back up the middle for a base hit on the very first pitch he saw. Then, he did the same…

Drew Goodman, voice of the Colorado Rockies for AT&T SportsNet, helps break down the different between the hype and hope for Ezequiel Tovar. What are the intangibles of the 21-year-old shortstop? Have the Rockies changed their organizational philosophy in the minors? And who’s next to debut in 2023?
