In the first game of the Gold Pan series, the No. 5 University of Denver Pioneers hosted Colorado College at Ball Arena for the first time. The momentous affair drew 17,952 in attendance. After getting swept on the road against St. Cloud State University last weekend, Denver hoped to get back in the win column. In net for Denver was…

The Denver Pioneers are on the hunt for their tenth national championship – the most of any college program. They’re currently tied at nine with the University of Michigan. After some big-name departures last season: Bobby Brink, Carter Savoie, captain Cole Guttman, and more – some may have entered this season with skepticism. The Pioneers haven’t had many stumbles. They…

DENVER – The No. 1 ranked Denver Pioneers took on the Colorado College Tigers on Friday night in one of the greatest rivalries in college hockey. It hasn’t been much of a rivalry as of late as the Pioneers have won the last 14 matchups. That streak ended as the Tigers scored late in the third period to take it…...

On the second night of the matchup between the No. 1 Denver Pioneers and the No. 3 North Dakota Fighting Hawks it was a different type of hockey game than the previous night. The Fighting Hawks had a desire to play physical which led to too many penalties and the Pioneers got to put their skill on full display. It was a 1-1 hockey game heading into the third period but the Pioneers came out like a team on a mission, scoring three goals in the third period to win 4-1.

One of the greatest rivalries in college hockey never disappoints, but this wasn't your average UND vs. DU game, this was the last two national champions going at it. It was also the No. 1 ranked Denver Pioneers against the No. 3 North Dakota Fighting Hawks. And it was another great hockey game, with the Fighting Hawks scoring the game-winner with just over two minutes left in the game to win 5-4.

DENVER – The No. 1 ranked Denver Pioneers handled the Lake Superior State Lakers 5-1, thanks in large part to the new guys, freshmen Dayton Rasmussen, Griffin Mendel and Jakko Heikkinen. Rasmussen stopped 15 shots, more than good enough for his first NCAA win, and Mendel and Heikkinen netted their first NCAA goals. The Lakers struck first nine minutes into…...

The hope, the plan, was to have Will Butcher signed, sealed and delivered to the Colorado Avalanche by now. It hasn’t happened yet, and with every passing day closer to Aug. 15, hope grows dimmer. The University of Denver defenseman, the winner of the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s best player this past season, technically remains property of…...

CHICAGO – Hockey has been a growing sport in Colorado since the Avalanche won Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001. But if you ask the players on the Denver Pioneers that grew up in Colorado, their first hockey memories were when DU won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005. That’s when college hockey became a big deal in Colorado once…...

CHICAGO – People love to talk about the stars, that’s how sports are covered. Will Butcher, Troy Terry, Henrik Borgström and Dylan Gambrell are all outstanding hockey players, but the depth that the Denver Pioneers possess is the reason they’ve got to this point and it’s the depth that will help them win the National Championship. “I think all…...

Two games, for all the marbles. That’s what the Denver Pioneers are looking at as they get ready to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Thursday night. It all comes down to this. DENVER – Hockey goalies have the most interesting job in sports. There are very few personalities in this world that want to stop pucks for a living; it’s even rarer to find one that’s really good at it. Most teams will look for height when recruiting goaltenders. The number of goaltenders under six feet tall is few and far…...

The Pios jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and never looked back from there, wrapping up a 5-2 first round victory. It was deja vu all over again for DU hockey fans as most will…...
