SAN DIEGO – Providing the kind of warmth in the winter that’s typical for the aptly-named Hot Stove League is what makes the Winter Meetings one of the most exciting times of the baseball season. Between $300 million deals and players changing employment from one coast to the other, as with Xander Bogaerts’ Boston-to-San Diego trek or Trea Turner’s Los…

A group of journalists walked down the hallway of the Manchester Grand Hyatt ready to speak with Colorado Rockies’ GM Bill Schmidt to discuss their offseason plans and gain insight about the near future of the franchise. As we waited for the elevator to go up to Schmidt’s suite, small talk was made as we each respectively began to think about the questions we’d pepper the fourth general manager in club history. The image of Brandon Nimmo wearing purple pinstripes has occupied space our minds since Colorado was first linked with the left-handed hitting center fielder from the New York Mets this offseason. Their interest even goes back to the end of the regular season. How we phrased our question…

When the Colorado Rockies hosted the 2021 All-Star Game in club history, it was the second in club history and first in 23 years. Running out to center field at Coors Field in the top of the first and batting eighth for the National League was Bryan Reynolds of the Pittsburgh Pirates. There’s a chance that scene could be revisited 81 times next year. Following failed negotiations on a contract extension between the club and player, Reynolds requested to be traded out of Pittsburgh. A spokesman with the team issued a statement that his request will be denied and that the 27-year-old will be a contributing member of the 2023 Pirates. Well, how else should they respond when their leverage…

Though he’s been at the helm for nearly two full seasons, Colorado Rockies’ GM Bill Schmidt will be participating in his first Winter Meetings since taking control of the yoke on May 3, 2021. He made the surprise signing of an “aircraft carrier” by the name of Kris Bryant before the start of the 2022 campaign. Who’s to say he may not try to acquire a Boeing 747 or even a Stealth Bomber this time around? For those who saw Colorado make zero moves at the trade deadline in August, the one hope for fans is that Schmidt doesn’t settle for a helicopter or hot air balloon that turns into more of a lead balloon.  National League Champs Philadelphia won…

And just like that, it’s all over. With a 6-1 loss to the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon, the Colorado Rockies finished their 2022 season with a 68-94 record (.420) and with sole possession of last place in the National League West. The first official offseason for Bill Schmidt as general manager brought about some big investments. Schmidt signed five free agents, swung a trade for a big league outfielder and locked up four Rockies to multi-year extensions before Opening Day. Extensions for Kyle Freeland and Daniel Bard during the season raised the total amount of new guaranteed money to $428 million following the end of the 2021 season. Despite the financial expenditure for a roster that appeared…

The 1-6 homestand dashed a lot of hope that Colorado could hit the over on 68.5 wins this season. It’s still possible, but what’s the scenario that allows them to sneak four wins on the California road trip? We dive into the responses GM Bill Schmidt made over the week about what went well, what didn’t and how the organization will respond. What’s on the To Do list for the Rockies? And which players might be on their way out? Colorado Rockies GM Bill Schmidt addressed the media on Saturday in the same dugout occupied by several of the prized prospects touted as the reason for optimism. Opening with remarks that thanked the fans for supporting his team, Schmidt highlighted the future of the franchise in the form of their farm system. “Needless to say, the season hasn’t met our expectations, but at the same point a lot of good things went on that don’t show up here every day,” before adding, “And I say that in terms of our minor leagues and some of the foundational pieces that we’re going to need going forward.” Schmidt spent significant amounts of the 14 minutes discussing the youth of the organization. Ezequiel…

The hype is more than just hope with the arrival of Colorado Rockies’ top infield prospect Ezequiel Tovar. Batting eighth and playing shortstop on Friday against the San Diego Padres as one of fives rookies in the starting lineup, Tovar represents the start of something promising for an organization heading into it’s fourth consecutive offseason without September relevance. At least that’s what everyone at 20th and Blake expects: promise. It’s the same exuberance for the fans inside Coors Field and anyone around the world wearing a cap with the interlocking C-R. Tovar delivered in his first game, knocking a single back up the middle for a base hit on the very first pitch he saw. Then, he did the same…

Entering the last day before MLB Trade Deadline with the 10th-best record in the National League and a full 10 games out of the third and final Wild Card, the Colorado Rockies stood pat. They made zero deals, not the first time they’ve handled a situation like this, and were the only team in MLB to not find a dance partner with which to improve the future of their franchise. “We had some communication today with a few clubs,” GM Bill Schmidt of the inactivity. “At the end of the day, we weren’t able to pull anything off that we thought made us better at this point in time and going forward. So, we decided to stay where we are.”…

Pyrrhus of Epirus was a Greek king who was considered to be one the great commanders of all-time despite not being the wisest among his peers. It’s for the latter reason his name is given to the type of decision-making that can result in a win whilst suffering severe losses: a Pyrrhic victory. If the Colorado Rockies want to get...

Entering phase two of the offseason following the end of the lockout on March 10, it appeared that the Colorado Rockies might go into Opening Day with several positional battles. Center field was wide open, as was the role of the team’s closer. Left field had a similar feel to it, unless Connor Joe wasn’t convincing enough during his 211...
