Story drives in seven as Rockies obliterate Blue Jays

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies absolutely obliterated the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night at Coors Field.

It was an onslaught for the Rockies offense who scored 13 runs on 17 hits as part of a 13-6 win.

Every memeber of the lineup except Ryan McMahon tallied at least one hit and six members of the lineup had multiple hits.

Ian Desmond reached base three times with two hits and a walk but he and McMahon were the only two guys in the lineup who didn’t score or drive in at least one run.

Trevor story drove in seven and hit two separate two-run bombs.

All this also means that the Rockies ended the month of May having scored 183 runs, more than an any other single month in franchise history.

Toronto starter Edwin Jackson came into the game with a 9.00 ERA and it only got worse.

The Rockies put four runs on the board before recording an out.

Raimel Tapia set the tone by winning the opening battle and drawing a walk on a full count.

He raced then trotted around the bases when Trevor Story leaned on a pitch that hung high in the zone and launched a high fly ball to left that ended up clearing the wall with ease.

It was Story’s 14th home run of the season.

David Dahl followed by striking out but was able to reach on a ball in the dirt. Nolan Arenado kept it going with grounder through the right side for a single.

That brough Daniel Murphy to the plate for the first time since he walked off on the Diamondbacks on Thursday, and he ripped a double down the right-field line, scoring both runners.

But the Blue Jays wasted no time in answering.

Randall Grichuk leaned on a hanging break ball and obliterated it into the left-field bleachers to get Toronto on the board.

Cavan Biggio backed that up with a hard single to left and Marquez got wild in a walk of Jonathan Davis.

He then unleashed a wild pitch that allowed the runners to advance. That cost him a run on a grounder by Luke Maile. But Marquez found the focus and struck out his counterpart before getting Freddy Galvis to hit a weak grounder to third.

Arenado was away from the line and needed to make a brilliant barehanded throw to end the inning. So of course he did.

He also punched back with another pair of runs for his club in the next half inning.

With the Rockies batting through the order in the first, Tapia again got things started but this time with a double down the line. It was his 12th two-bagger of the year.

Story walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball before Arenado scorched one into the gap to make it 6-2.

Colorado just kept it going, scoring multiple runs in their third straight frame out of the gates.

This time, it was the bottom  of the order that begun the proceedings. Tony Wolters lined a one-out single, as did Marquez after failing to lay down a bunt.

Tapia made it three in a row to load the bases and Story promptly unloaded them with a grounder inside the line for a double.

Dahl added another double to plate Story, giving the Rockies a four-run inning and a whopping 10-2 lead.

Colorado took a brief break from scoring in the fourth only to get back at it in the fifth, getting a run on yet another double from Arenado, scoring Tapia for the fourth time in the game.

Once again, Colorado caught a brief breather in the sixth before getting two more on another home run for Story.

All this happened while Marquez cruised through his final five innngs of work but the Coors crowd got a look at the prodigious power of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. who blasted Chris Rusin’s second pitch back from IL deep over the wall in center.

Brandon Drury then came up with a line drive single and Guerriel Jr. doubled to left making Grichuk’s ensuing fly ball a sacrifice for another run.

Cavan Biggio slapped another single past the infield and Jonathan Davis walked to load the bases, ending Rusin’s night.

Jake McGee came on and walked the first man he faced on four pitches to bring in a run then gave up a long liner that Dahl hauled in on the track for a sac fly that made it a 13-6 game before finally getting the third out on a grounder.

The Rockies actually loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth but did not score.

Jesus Tinoco entered the game in the top of the ninth, making his MLB debut.

He gave up a double to Guerrero Jr. in his first encounter then recorded his first K, getting Drury swinging. He struck out the next batter and got a grounder to third to end the game.

The Rockies are now two games over .500 at 29-27 and are a half-game out of postseason positioning.

They have won six in a row.
